Pro life nonsense will defeat republican presidential candidate

Umm, this isn't the Great Depression where you paid 500 guys one dollar per day to dig a canal with hand shovels.

These days an infrastructure job worth $100M is done with five union workers and bulldozers and steamrollers. I am sure everyone saw the hard CBO numbers on how much one created job actually cost during our first big "get unemployment down to 8 %" $900B fiasco.

Want stimulus ? Offer a complete tax holiday for domestic manufacturers. Offer tax credits for manufacturers who import jobs into the country. Much more efficient than greasing construction unions.
 
I don't know if any of you guys have been unemployed before or not. And I'm talking scary unemployed, like half a tank of gas in the car, rent 3 weeks late, empty refrigerator and no prospects for work in site. I've blocked out some of the memories but from what I can remember it was very unpleasant. I feel for those people.

Don't need it, but thanks anyway. I'll hire when sales, or possibly just projected sales, warrant it. Not until.

Edit: agree with you re the relatively high capital low labor nature of infrastructure projects. I think we could afford to "low tech" (maybe) a bit in this country (oh, what is the Indian word for those long human chains that pass goods up and down docks?), but that's another topic.

This is not to defend Carter who is one of my least favorite Presidents, but more as a fact-check.

1) Carter left Reagan double-digit inflation. True. In Jan '81 when Reagan took office inflation was at 11.83%

2) Carter left Reagan an Iranian hostage disaster. False. Of the original 66 hostages 14 had long been released, and all remaining issues had been worked out so the other 52 were released on Jan 20, 1981 the day Reagan was sworn in as President.

3) Carter left Reagan double-digit unemployment. False. As you can see by this Wall Street Journal historical unemployment rate (hover your mouse over any month) when Reagan took office in Jan '81 the unemployment rate was 7.5%. Under Reagan it later peaked at 10.8% and then tailed off from there.

With that said I agree completely that Obama has made some horrendous economic decisions and the economy is his, he cannot blame it on his predecessor. Same btw for all the wars, the ones he inherited and the ones he started, they are his and his alone. Sure would be nice if Presidents manned-up, adopted the Harry Truman motto of "The Buck Stops Here", and didn't whine about the conditions they walked into. They knew the situation when they applied for the job.
 
My perception is that Obama outsourced everything to Pelosi and Reid with very little direction - and that's where the trouble really got started. Personally, I blame Pelosi and Reid far more than Obama. I give Obama very high marks for national security.

But I can't vote out Pelosi or Reid.

Oh, BTW, fetuses have no bearing on Presidential elections.

Exactly Ricter, I hire when the work requires it and not until then. And right now I'll back up jobs to save for my regular guys to keep a paycheck coming. I'm not in manufacturing but I would think the thought process would be the same.

Regarding the hostage crisis, Carter did not resolve it, it was passed to the Reagan presidency. It was solved because of the Algiers Accords, which Carter's Deputy Sec of State negotiated, but from which was wildly speculated that Reagan's influence drove Iran to negotiate at the table. If you want to mince over the actual hour the release, feel free. Carter did try a military exercise to solve the crisis, and we all know how that ended up.

Regarding the unemployment rate, I would argue that Obama ALSO got an economy with an unemployment rate of 7.6% when he was sworn in. But the unemployment rate further declined to touch ~10% later on - this is because unemployment is a lagging indicator and representitive of the economic crisis which was passed to him by Bush. So too with Reagan. The difference, of course, was that by the beginning of Reagan's second year, unemployment had peaked and was beginning it's decline - which ended in a decline back to where he started by the end of his first term, and then much lower into his second term. Obama has yet to accomplish this.

Just a fact check to your fact check. You can't just look up stats sometimes.

I would rather be left with that and a nearly balanced budget and national debt less then a trillion then to be left with a trillion dollar deficit,2 wars,housing and financial collapse etc
 
So would I, but lets not forget what congress put that trillion dollar deficit in place (hint, it wasn't a republican controlled one) and what President then went on to triple it.

If you (or I) were elected with a trillion dollar deficit, would we then go ahead and make it $4 trillion?

1.The President is responsible for the budget,he proposes it and he can veto it

2.The deficit isn't 4 trillion

3.Its easy to say you would have cut all spending but a lot of that money went to states to fix their budgets and prevented a lot of job losses.If the auto industry had failed thats millions more unemployed.Firing federal workers also means millions more unemployed but critics complain about 10 % unemployment. I can only imagine the critics bitching if he had allowed all those jobs to be loss in a 1 or 2 year span.As a start I would have had a stimulus to save most of those jobs but a smaller one. I would have ended both wars immediately and dropped the defense budget to 200-300 billion max and ended the bush tax cuts for all immediately and pushed to end Bushes medicaid drug expansion or raise taxes to pay for it.I would phase out TSA /Homeland security and all of Bushs expansion of government over a 4 year period.

The best place to start to fix things is to correct Bushes mistakes and go from there imo
