Primal / Paleo Diet

Quote from tomdavis:

I'm not talking about eating a diet that exclusively high fat like the examples you're referring to. I'm talking about a balanced diet that includes meat, fresh vegetables and fruits and also nuts and seeds -- but eliminates all sugars and processed foods.

In addition to meat, I eat a lot of fresh organic vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Success for me has come from finding the right balance.

I EAT:
1. Fresh meats (unprocessed and never fried)
2. Fresh organic vegetables
3. Fresh organic fruits
4. Raw organic nuts and seeds.

I NEVER EAT:
1. Processed foods and sugars
2. Transfats
3. Milk products

Tom,

Thanks for sharing your story, makes a lot of sense, good fundamentals there. How do you usually eat the nuts and seeds? I've found that adding some raisings/cranberries to walnuts and almonds helps stomach them down. Really helps with digestion too!

Also, do you think anything specifically has had an outsized contribution to the decline in triglycerides and cholesterol? Or was it simply eliminating certain things like milk?

Eliminate ALL processed food from your diet. No sugar or refined carbs (e.g. cereals, pastas, breads, cookies, etc.)

Eat fresh organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and a small amount of lean meats. Eliminate grains and keep milk products to a bare minimum. Only drink water and herbal teas.

I did this for a year and my cholesterol fell from 290 to 150. My triglycerides fell from 400 to 80. I lost weight and I no longer get tired in the afternoon. At night I sleep better than ever.

Processed foods are killers. Anywhere you find high levels of processed foods you will also find epidemic levels of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Stop eating things that come in boxes, bottles (except water), bags and cans. That stuff will destroy your health.

Wow! That is really quite an accomplishment! One I don't think I can actually do. I get that processed foods are killers but when you stop eating food that comes in boxes, bottles, bags and cans, that kind of eliminates the whole damn grocery store except the produce area :/

How about black, red and brown rice? Not the "Uncle Ben's" in a box but the 10 lb bags imported from SE Asia? Do they qualify as minimally processed, or are they still "bad" since they are carbohydrates?

Actually, trips to the grocery store are pretty quick. Aside from spices and maybe some bottled water, everything you need is on the periphery of the store. The middle aisles are pretty much a processed food wasteland.

I think it depends on your goals. I eat some sprouted brown rice and steel cut oats. Mainly before or after a workout, or if I'm trying to gain weight. Rice doesn't contain gluten, but has proteins that the body treats very similarly to gluten, so it could be problematic for some people. If you are trying to reduce body fat, limiting or avoiding rice will help.

But each person is unique and the best course is to experiment and see what works for you. If you completely remove a food from your diet for a month or two, then reintroduce it, you might discover a sensitivity or change you weren't aware of.

Yogurt is a milk product but it is certainly very healthy and it is a great way to lower the GI value of carbs. For example, yogurt with your fruit or museli will slow the release of insulin in the blood.

And the probiotics are good for you as well.

Actually there's more commonality amongst our response to various nutritional components of a meal then defifference. Although I am aware it's fashionable to say otherwise:D
