If your smoking didn't drive up everyone else's health insurance premiums, no one would give a shit if you put yourself in a coffin enjoying your cigs. The problem is how insurance rates are calculated and in particular the massive societal costs.
Worse, constant exposure to second hand smoke puts innocent bystanders in a coffin. Misery loves company.
A few ruin it for the majority is how it usually works, sadly.

You can smoke in your house until your lungs leak with tar for all I care. However, as I stated in the post above, since we are all tied by the society we live in, if the costs of insuring you raises my premiums, fuck your freedom. It is a balance between your freedoms and societal costs. It always has been and always will be. Now, if your lungs collapsed (like my father's did from smoking) and you decided to die right there and not raise my premiums by making use of a hospital and being put on an iron lung for two weeks, well, then I say smoke some more in your own home! Enjoy!
Just like I say fuck to your freedom to unlimited owning of more and more deadly weapons.

man, I can think of a lot of ways we could save a lot of money just by eliminating a lot of freedom
Balance is the key word. Enjoy yourself and be respectful of others. Get a gun and shoot at target for the sport - it is fun. Get a pack and enjoy smokes in a temperate way. Think of ways to live and let live. Freedoms are not unlimited when you live with people in a society. If you want unlimited freedom, there is a mountain somewhere that will house you.
That is called the Social Contract.

No, you're not getting off that easy. For me freedom is first and foremost. Without freedom you have nothing. Now, I will give up some of my freedom to live peacefully with you, but your well organized safe society with acceptable violations is worth nothing to me if it isn't just thriving with individual freedom.
I think it is a worthy goal for each individual to have the utmost freedom, believe me. I am suggesting you think through when your freedoms may in fact be trampling on other peoples freedom.
You say you want to leave peacefully with me, but I think those are just words for you. What do they really mean when you break it down and everyone wants their UNLIMITED freedom? Has your kumbaya statement taken that into consideration?
Until the Singularity arrives, we must all try strive to not just live by our own freedoms, but be respectful of other people's freedoms too. It is currently impossible to have unlimited freedom for everyone. There is a balance between those two.
