Pope says serpent temptation in Bible 'first fake news'

Pope Francis has denounced the "snake tactics" of those who spread fake news, saying the first case of misinformation is in the Bible when Eve is tempted by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit.

The episode showed the "dire consequences" that fake news can have, the Pope warned in a document.

Francis also said it led only to the spread of arrogance and hatred.

He urged social media users and journalists to unmask manipulative tactics that foment division.

The document The Truth Will Set You Free - Fake News and Journalism for Peace was issued ahead of the Catholic Church's World Communications Day on 13 May, and it was the first time the Pope has written on the topic.

It comes amid a debate on ways to contain the spread of fake news on social media platforms and how it may have influenced recent elections, including in the US in 2016.

"Spreading fake news can serve to advance specific goals, influence political decisions, and serve economic interests," the Pope said.

Comparing it to the serpent's message of temptation in the Bible, he added: "We need to unmask what could be called the 'snake tactics' used by those who disguise themselves in order to strike at any time and place."

He called for "education for truth" that would teach people how to discern, evaluate and understand information.

Additionally, he said the role of journalists - whom he called "the protectors of news" - was "not just a job, it is a mission".

He said they should focus less on breaking news and more on "exploring the underlying causes of conflicts".

Donald Trump accuses Ted Cruz's father of being with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before he assassinated President John F. Kennedy. Trump was repeating what he saw in the National Enquirer and the the Miami Herald also reporting the tabloid's story.

"His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald's being -- you know, shot [Kennedy]. I mean, this whole thing is ridiculous. What is this? Right prior to his being shot, and nobody even brings it up! They don't even talk about it. That was reported, and nobody talks about it. I mean, what was he doing? What was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death? Before the shooting. It's horrible," Trump said on FOX & Friends this morning.

Yeah.. CNN and FOX are awful whores but there are deeper roots.
 
this is the most overtly political pope in my lifetime.
unfortunately you can see by his lack of reasoning and how often the church has to walk his statements that he could have used some university training.


The previous pope was a university professor and the difference in his capacity for thought is obvious and striking.

this guy chimes in with shallow views so often he has is like the pope who cried wolf.

Wait, the Pope advocating honest information is political and makes him a shallow leftist?

You have to love fake news to think that.

Try building a house with a fake geological survey and let me know how that works out.
 
No... I (we) all agree fake news is bad.

You probably believe that the major media could never be fake news.
I know that it worked hard to promote hillary and discounts as much as it can certain truthful items it does not wish the people to know.
hence it is at times fake news.

However, in my post about Francis, I was not really taking a stance on this message. It was not very deep and his lefty viewpoint was probably "sanitized" since it was not a verbal statement.

I was pointing out he has been chiming in so much and so often with shallow views, he is like the boy who cried wolf.

many who might have cared about his statement no longer do.
