Deep inside the forbidden zone at the U.S.-occupied Bagram air base in Afghanistan, around the corner from the detention center and beyond the segregated clandestine military units, sits a cluster of metal shipping containers protected by a triple layer of concertina wire. The containers hold the most valuable prizes in the war on terrorism -- captured al Qaeda operatives and Taliban commanders.

Those who refuse to cooperate inside this secret CIA interrogation center are sometimes kept standing or kneeling for hours, in black hoods or spray-painted goggles, according to intelligence specialists familiar with CIA interrogation methods. At times they are held in awkward, painful positions and deprived of sleep with a 24-hour bombardment of lights -- subject to what are known as "stress and duress" techniques.

Those who cooperate are rewarded with creature comforts, interrogators whose methods include feigned friendship, respect, cultural sensitivity and, in some cases, money. Some who do not cooperate are turned over -- "rendered," in official parlance -- to foreign intelligence services whose practice of torture has been documented by the U.S. government and human rights organizations.

I always enjoy reading the posts of some of our more pompous-assed European friends about how stupid, brainless, naive, don't-have-a-clue, Americans are. Yet, more has been achieved in the US in the last 200 hundred years than has been in Europe in the last 2000. GAIA (thesaurus in hand) is the poster child for those Europeans who are determined to convince themselves that they are intellectually superior. Actually, the man who kills another over religious beliefs can belong to any age in history: he has belonged to the bronze age, the medieval age, the renaissance, the age of enlightenment, the industrial age, and the post industrial age. And probably the pre-civil epoch

Not until man jettisons the tribalism inherent in religion will he stop killing in its name. And when that happens all of earth's inhabitants will belong to the same tribe, one not centered on any religion.

North Korea restarting the nuke program and expelling UN inspectors. China supports N Korea.. what do we do? attack them too?

Iraq downs a drone (Boing made predator UAV) over the "no fly" zone, and we retaliate by killing few in a "military installation" ( I think cnbc yest mentioned that our attacks may have killed civilians per Iraqi news, no response from US on that claim yet)

It sure is spooking this market... and the world for that matter too.

I just hope cool heads prevail...
