By neutral debating standards Trump did incredibly poorly. He lost almost every argument. He allowed his opponent to get under his skin. He became unhinged and lost his temper I think twice. He kept on defending himself starting from 10 minutes into the debate. Yet he fared pretty well in the post debate polls, relative to his weak performance. Clearly people expected him to do even worse so they were somewhat feeling OK about his overall conduct that night.
Did I forget to mention that fact checkers believe 1 or 2 of Trumps statements proved to be correct while 1 or 2 of Clinton's statements turned out to be misleading at worst.
