Poker and the Beginning Trader

Quote from PuffyGums:

you'd think there are people with poker machines helping them play just like there are on the chess sites.
It's available, for less than you would make from one winning real money pot. Should we consider it cheating? One thing is sure, you could never use a tool like this in a physical game, but online allows you the opportunity.

Hey all,
Decided after much research to purchase the Turbo Texas Hold'em Software from http://www.wilsonsw.com it sounds like it would be comparable with a high end strategy back-tester along with the ability to play hold'em and be coached while you play, wish they had something like this for trading. Most of the best poker players around use it for testing strategies, and a lot of people swear by it for getting a solid footing in this game.

I should get it by the weekend and will report back once I have had a chance to work with it.

p.s. I have no affiliation with Wilsons other than that I have just purchased their product.

wdbaker, you won't be disappointed. I was involved in the beta-testing for versions 3.0 and 4.0, but am unfamiliar with 5.0's new features.

Thanks Mr. Subliminal, that makes me feel better about my purchase, tell your mom I said Hi :D

Everyone seems to be focusing on holdem.
It's a great game but may not be the best
to learn first.

In my experience with online poker,
the 7stud games are much more profitable.
They have more players who are weak and
loose. That is, they don't bet or raise when
they are ahead and they frequently call when
they are behind and getting short odds.

Plus 7stud has five rounds of betting as
opposed to 4 in holdem.

I use all the Turbo programs from Wilson
and recommend them.

My only caveat is that you must use them
frequently and play as if the money is real.
otherwise you may end up giving your money away.

I play in home games with many players who
have the programs but are lousy.

All,
I'm glad you are all saying good things about this software, I think it was about $89 or so, not a lot of money but glad to know that I didn't waste it. I guess I should have checked with you guys first, didn't figure anyone here would have used something that specialized for poker , should have known better.

If it just gets me to the point that I can hold my own consistently I will be very happy. Maybe someday I can trade during the day and play poker at night :)

Thanks again for the comments

Just curious,

How many folks, besides Hii_a_ooiioo_a, are ready to give up this tough market and play online poker for a living?

I just read over this thread and looked over a couple of the sites mentioned. I used to be a decent poker player many many years ago.

I have no idea if it is possible to make a living with online poker, but there would seem to be some advantages.

No data or desk fees, no big capital requirement ( I think), no set market hours... etc. And poker is not subject to the whims of the economy (for the most part) and the rules and odds of poker are not subject to the news of the day.

However, I am also confidant that it is probably no easier to play professional poker thah it is to trade stocks. Just a few are going to be consistant winners, and the rest are just part of the pack.

So.... who is headed out for a new career?

I doubt seriously that it is any easier to make serious money playing poker than it is trading. I would be willing to bet that the percentage of traders making a living at it and the percentage of poker players making a living at it are pretty similiar. There is only so much room at the top of the food chain.
