Poker and the Beginning Trader

hey fellas, thought i would pass this on to you guys, esp. for the newly inspired poker players. every saturday at 3 p.m. et if you are sitting around bored, pokerroom.com has a holdem tournament for only 1$ buy in, and they kick in $2500. its a cool and cheap way to practice tournament style and still possibility to win some loot. btw.. i play there alot unde rhandle "manwittheaxe"

Thanks and keep posting these if possible - I can't play today but I want to try a tournament sometime soon.

Bought Lee Jones "Winning Low Limit Hold-Em"... boy oh boy. I am essentially maintaining at break-even and it's no wonder - I thought I was playing tight but I haven't understood the 'aggressive' part of the 'tight - aggressive' equation.

Also pot odds and implied odds - completely changes the way I look at my hands and my actions.

Winners raise or fold, others check and call. How's that for a massive generalization? :)

Man that was a blast. Thats an even better deal for a buck than 1010220.:) I only made it to the third round. Had 4 of a kind in the early rounds but could not catch anything after that. Got knocked out with 3 tens. I hope they do that again.
 
thats what i was saying, isnt that the best $1 ever spent....
i did the best i ever did in that tourney today, i made it to 88 people left out of i think it was 732, but ran out of cards, and moves. see you guys next time....

they do it every sat. easy; yes even better than 1010220 LMAO.
sometimes you need more than some good cards to advance in the later rounds, it takes some moves. fun nonetheless though.

sounds like your learning, pretty fast too if your just learning. one key is to identify what type of table your at, loose, tight, passsive, aggressive, etc... and adjust your play accordingly.
i.e most low limits are loose. in tourney play it gets a lot different to and changes as the blinds increase.

Yes, feeling a little better after reading the Jones book, but I will have to read it about 20 more times to fully digest the ideas. I am going to be at the tourney next Saturday - never played at that particular site but I will look for you.

I like Jones' description of low-limit games as "No Fold-Em Hold-Em", i.e. you have 6+ players seeing every flop. After observing some of the high limit and no limit games, I can see how true that is.
 
www.pokah.com is a message forum (similar to Elite Trader), in association with www.pokerroom.com, related to poker and online gaming. Your registration at pokerroom.com makes you an automatic member at pokah.com. Pokah.com is only about 7 weeks old.

Pokerroom.com does have poker tournament tables every day, the difference on saturday is that there is a bonus prize pot.

I think I will be on Pokah.com more, and Elite Trader less, now that I have found that online gambling is looking more profitable, as well as more fun, for me, than trading.

Thanks especially to traderNik for starting this thread, and to phantom for posting the pokerroom.com link, which got me started in this direction, a mere two weeks ago.

I think I might start an Elite Trader thread on pokah.com, where we might continue this discussion with more emphasis on gambling, and make the general topic the stock market as a metaphor for gambling (which is what I truly believe the stock market is!), rather than the other way around. :)

On Elite Trader your member status is determined by how many posts you make. More often than not the only result of having a higher number of posts here is just that people attack you for posting too much and accusing you of being full of hot air.

On Pokah.com, they give reward points for active membership, which convert to real-money table cash! Each "pokah point" has a cash value of $0.001. Each message forum post (10 points) is thus worth 1¢. Bad posts (spam, rudeness) will not only get deleted, but lose you pokah points. The reverse is true for "good posts".
20,000 pokah points will get you $20 real-money in your pokerroom.com account.
