The 'portrait' setup was started a couple of years ago beginning with 4 monitors. Then I changed to 8, then 10 and lately 12.
I like the vertical setup because it allows for making more charts 'taller'. At the time, the 19'' screens were much less than the 20''. The cards are all Matrox G450MMS. The other reason, as you pointed out is less desk space. I think 3 monitors stacked on top of each other though, would be too high. I had to get a new chair so it will lift to the right height. Initially it takes some getting used to.
