What a load of old rubbish. Modern science, and in particular physics is in many ways completely at odds with common sense. Most people accept Einsteins theory of relativity, not because they understand it or because it follows common sense or "can be seen by any reasonable man", but because they have a belief that scientists abiding by sound scientific methods have good evidence for it. And peer review is part of those methods.
And if you think relativity is hard to get your head around, how about quantum physics. I'd suggest that a fair percentage of the population wouldn't have a clue about it, but those who know what it is accept it because of their belief in science, not because it rings some sort of bell.
Which is why science needs high standards including peer review.
