The republicans in the senate agree the president used foreign aid to try to leverage a foreign country to investigate his political rival on bogus charges but do not want to remove him from office for this.
Lamar Alexander has no question there is a mountain of evidence proving the allegations.
This is quite the precedent being set. Presidents are now allowed to use the power of the executive ranch in their own elections without regard for law or ethics.
Simultaneously the justice department is arguing the president can extend blanket immunity and executive privilege with no recourse other than impeachment and removal.
The presidency is neither checked by congress or the judiciary as of today.
There will be no going back. Democrats will not vote out a dem president now and vice versa. The courts are stacked with autocratic right wing sympathizers so it could be a generation or two before we can even think of co-equal branches without laughing.
It’s a bad day for the constitution and the rule of law. Yes, we will survive but we are diminished as a republic.
