Peaceable Assembly in Protest of Business Closures

You should protest as needed as long as it is peaceful and safe distancing is practiced.

It is American to notify the police that you will be safe and peaceful. However, it is un-American to excessively seek the police/state approval and "ok" before protesting. Conduct yourself honorably, and give them a copy of the Bill of Rights if they have a problem.

Tis the nature of protest that things may not always be to someone's liking. There are risks to both sides though. Refer to Gov. Whitmore and Michigan for more on that. That would be the same Governor Whitmore who was being considered for VP until last week.

The whole idea of an American stopping by to the police to have them "ok" a protest makes me want to vomit though. Unless it is just to give notification as may be required for traffic and crowd safety purposes by some ordinances.

I wonder if Michigan has jailed that person set for working in their garden behind her house.
Thank you for your response, and for addressing the question.

In theory, yes, we should not have to notify the police. In practice, if they don't like what you're doing, it can have serious consequences.

I would be stepping into the line of fire.

And everyone knows that donut shops are essential businesses.

Just to be clear... this is the position of police in North Carolina. You come protest then your rear will rot in jail.

Next thing you know they will be riding out to Lexington and Concord to take control of the colonial powderhouses because the locals have been getting a bit too free speechy and assemblyish of late.

Not sure that went as well for them as they hoped.

To be clear: the question is about the risks of exercising my first-amendment rights in protest of business closures.

It is NOT about arguing the pros and cons of doing so.

no one is stopping you from protesting.

Get a sign...stand on a street corner and scream as long as you wear a mask and practice social distancing from people walking by laughing at you.

Write a letter to the editor and find a local community rag looking for material that will publish it.

Record a Dick Tok making your case and make it viral among your 3 friends.

First amendment right still intact.

They should start challenging this in courts to set limits on the powers of the abusive Governors who think they are above the US constitution.
