Good thread, glad someone is taking the initiative and providing a basis for discussion. Having said that...

I would disagree with the characterization of the US effort as 'amazing'. I think 'good' would be more appropriate. Let's face it, it's overwhelmingly likely that they wouldn't have scored against England, based on the play for 89 minutes. That goal doesn't raise their performance rating for this game. Has they come out of that game with a 1-0 loss but with good play, analysts would have considered it an adequate effort.

I know Americans don't think this way, and a loss is a loss. That's obviously a good thing. Really hoping to see them go through.

Point taken. I wasn't looking at Green's mistake to give higher marks to the US side, or the result. The point I was making was that based on where the US is coming from, they played exceptionally well. England has 90+ decades of experience in the field and the level of game in England is one of the best in the world, if not the best.

Given the way the team is moving forwards and the new found interest for the sport in the US, it is not inconceivable for the US to reach a World Cup final in 10+ yrs....

I enjoy World Cup soccer but that buzzing is not for me. I turned it off.

They are called vuvuzelas

Not sure about the rest of Africa but they are very popular in SA. Personally I think it is too much, they should be banned, even though I am getting used to the noise. The regular sound of the crowds in the stadiums is so much more powerful...and pleasant to the ears...:)

Germany Australia report.

Surprised to have seen Germany play so well. Obviuosly it was easy for them to beat the Aussies, we shall see what happens when they play a good team. If they keep this level of play I shall buy my position back and get long, but not too long.....:)

You're right - the fact that they were even in a game with England means that U.S. soccer has come a long way. I've always thought that the diving and acting is something that U.S. fans will not be able to accept and will have to be dealt with before soccer can really gain a foothold in America, but the demographics of the U.S. population now might make it a fait accompli.

Of course, nothing succeeds like success, and if they can have some good results and get to a quarter sometime in the next 2 or 3 World Cups, it would be huge for U.S. soccer. Tough ask, but not impossible.
