He was asked to comment on race relations. He said he didn't know what part race played in this incident. You even highlighted that part! He didn't comment on that which he did not know as it related to this case. He only commented on the broad sequence of events that were not in dispute as it related to this case. His subsequent general comments about race were in response to the question asked of him and not in specific connection with the facts of this case. Are you really this dense in real life?
