I was nearly arrested three times in the USA in my late 20s backpacking around (not hitching). I was clean cut and rich, just as not a local I was getting very wary of cops. In the 20 plus years before this in Ireland I never had one issue.

A friend (also tourist) of mine was arrested for being a suspected drug dealer simply because he tried to use a payphone, broken, went to the next, broken and while calling his girlfriend on the third he was thrown in jail, it took him 48 hours to get out. Why? Because his irises looked a little large.

As a local you might never meet a cop, if you are not they can be unbelievably intrusive.

I had a gun unholstered by a cop when I asked for directions holding a map! Why? Because I'm six six, same size as Floyd... I have to do some work.

And when the police did finally arrive on the scene, they immediately ran and pinned the store owners, who are Black, against the wall. Throughout the incident Fox 11 reporterChristina Gonzalez, and several other bystanders, yelled at the police in an attempt to correct the mistake.

Governor issues a health order for stay at home.... people still went out. Did not see the police called to tear gas and fire rubber bullets at the beach goers....

People stormed the capital armed and forced their way in...no tear gas or bullets to stop them.

People protesting in the streets this past week and they were tear gassed and hit with rubber bullets but looters were not touched I guess.

Wonder why the difference then.....

You argued protests should be allowed to fight for their rights to go to church and get their hair cut...nothing done to them.

People marched in the street as they are allowed to do and were met with violence because looters who police ignored where doing shit elsewhere.

And I'm funny about keeping context. When the protests and the riots are happening in the same place, at the same time, it should come as no surprise that one will become entangled in the other. This does not excuse police abuses where they happen, and I have said repeatedly those offenses need to be prosecuted, but to think this will all be sorted out in real time when everyone is in the thick of it is quite unrealistic. When the enemy embeds themselves among the masses shit will happen. We have seen this in every single conflict we have ever been in no matter how large or small. It's a common tactic and used repeatedly because it works so well. Everyone hates the collateral damage except those who use it. They in fact count on it to weaken the resolve of their opponents. Wars have been won using it.

No, I argued that they had a Constitutional right to attend church. I didn't say they had any rights to get their hair cut, and the discussion wasn't about firing rubber bullets. I argued they should be able to go to church. That is all I said.

I also defend the people's right to assemble now, even with the curfew. I am consistent and will always try to be.

What I said in this thread was "Don't be surprised if you stand in front of marching police and get hit with a rubber bullet if you resist dispersing." I have always said that if you believe a police officer is being unjust you should still follow the officer or risk physical harm - fight it over later legally. I can show you multiple examples if you wish where I said this.

Both of my comments apply equally to people who have the right to go to church AND those who have the right to assemble and peacefully protest.

The Constitutional rights are not absolute, they just cannot be taken away with out due process. It is the law that gives you those rights and the same law can take them away as upheld by the Supreme Court. You cannot waive the Bill of Rights and ignore the Supreme Court.

If you don't believe that then you are simple arguing opinion/emotion versus law.

No one disagrees it is happening, just that it was illegal. Plenty of Supreme Court and Appellate court decisions upholding limitations on assembly and religion under Constitutional law so to say it was illegal is ignoring the court's authority and precedent. You cannot call it illegal because it is not against the law to limit 1st Amendment rights when there is a rationale that is not arbitrary or capricious or without reaonsableness as the SC and Appellate courts have established.

Inconvenience is not enough of a reason to claim your constitutional rights are being violated. Government said don't go to the church temporarily but nothing stopping you from being a Christian, watching a mass online, praying with your bible in the house, calling your religious figure for the time being.
