A kindergarten student in Pennsylvania brought a loaded revolver to school on Monday, according to authorities.

Police in Aliquippa, a city northwest of Pittsburgh, said the gun was found in the 5-year-old's backpack after a friend told a teacher about it.

The family of the child who brought the gun to school is defending him, saying that the boy found the gun on a bed at home and wanted to keep it away from his 3-year-old brother.

The boy has been suspended, but family friends told WPXI that it was an accident.

“He put it in his book bag and forgot it was in there... For them to say he’s aggressive, that’s a lie,” the boy's godmother, Nicole Lutle, told the station. “It’s not that this child was bad. It’s not that this child had a temper because all of that is a lie.”

A letter was sent Tuesday to the homes of all other parents who had kids at the school, but some of them told WPXI they were upset that they didn't know about the incident sooner.

Police are weighing whether or not the child's mother should face charges.

I've heard of the NRA calling for an armed guard at every school, but not in the kindergarten. Could that be just another exaggeration by an inept, whining gasbag like yourself again? Ayup.

You (and all of us) should at least have home defense weapons. Good choices include shotgun (20 ga OK, as 12 ga may be too powerful for women), carbine (easier to hit target than handgun), .22lr semi-auto rifle (deputy sheriff friend of mine recommends this... inexpensive, easy to handle, easy to quickly put a few rounds on target).

You don't really want powerful guns for home defense.... like AR, AK, 308, 30.06... you don't want to be killing neighbors accidentally. And if your state has Castle Doctrine laws, you really can't shoot anybody unless they encroach into your domicile, so a powerful rifle is inappropriate.

Optics? Not worried about "missing and killing somebody", I'd be worried about collateral damage.

What about "overpenetration"? Isn't there some accountability if your round goes through your perp, through your walls, through the neighbor's walls and kills somebody?

And there are .45 cal carbine and .357/.44 magnum carbines available.

You may have me on that. I didn't know 5.56 ammo was available in subsonic. (And if it is, would have a lot less power than even a 9mm. If subsonic, big caliber makes more sense.) However, mini-gun surely is not. And even so, you might want to check penetration characteristics and types of ammo. Home defense rounds are intended to not overpenetrate.

I read a review of the Henry .357 Magnum carbine. Said, "everybody should have one of these behind the kitchen door."
