I would let em all stay home, for as long as they want. Just take their pay and re-allocate it to the local Education Freedom Accounts (ie. vouchers), and let parents or the organization they designate decide.

I see that Arizona is going the route of giving schools an extra 7 thousand per pupil to have in-person teaching. Yeh baby, keep them dollars rolling, and of course we want to pass most of that down to the teachers, because teachers taking care of teachers is what public schools and unions are all about. And then there is the matter of what they do and do not teach when and if they do teach.


A new study led by faculty at Binghamton University, State University of New York shows that COVID-19 incidence rates were not statistically different in counties with in-person learning versus remote school modes in most regions of the U.S.

Yet you fail to note that the schools that managed to stay open for in-person learning and not get overrun by Covid generally instituted mandatory masking, social distancing, cleaning, testing, and other protocols to keep the schools safe.

The county Covid infection level is not really a reflection of the school system policy -- so effectively this study is ass-backwards. The children in schools plus employees only are a small portion (20% or less) of the county population. The Covid prevalence level in a county is driven by many other factors -- and should be used (as per CDC guidelines) as a barometer for if the K-12 schools should be open for in-person learning and what level of Covid protection measures are required in the schools.

And I am fine with that point. Why don't you re-frame it as being supportive of the point I am making rather than to do your knee jerk defense of bullshiite school closings.

You have a boner for pointing out that many schools successfully remained open by doing X,Y,Z or whatever. Fine. Do that. And tell that to the Chicago Teachers Union. These clown cities like Chicago got bilions in additional school aid to make their schools safer the last time they used covid to hold the city and public hostage. Things are pretty bad when Lori Lightfoot and I are on the same side of the issue. They need to get their fingers out of their arses and get the schools open and dock the pay of any teacher who does not show up, with room for exceptions for high riskers or whatever. Just get going for chrise-sake.

CNN covered this in the morning with a former head of CDC and noted the incidence of spread of COVID in schools has been extremely low because of the mask wearing and social distancing efforts which does work in indoor spaces. The teachers are actually safer from catching COVID in school except maybe the youngest classes as Kinder and 1st grade kids suck at following rules. The talking heads on CNN as well as the former CDC expert (former pediatrician) said for many reasons, including mitigation factors in place, that having them in school is the best option. 95% of the teachers were listed as vaccinated as well.

I think the Chicago union went a little rogue here and even the Mayor was caught off guard.

The reason the transmission rates in schools are so low is because of mask wearing, social distancing and increased santizing and cleaning protocols. With teachers and children in buildings in close proximity these masures have kept the spread via school contact down very significantly.

FACT:

Studies of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in schools that consistently implemented layered prevention strategies have shown success in limiting transmission in schools, even when testing of close contacts has been incomplete.38, 46, 49, 73-77 For example:

  • A study of 11 school districts in North Carolina with in-person learning for at least nine weeks during the fall 2020 semester reported minimal school-related transmission even while community transmission was high.38 These schools implemented and strictly adhered to multiple prevention strategies, including universal mask use and physical distancing. Breaches in mask use likely explained the few instances of in-school spread of SARS-CoV-2.
  • A study of elementary schools in Utah who implemented layered prevention strategies, such as mask wearing and cohorting, found very low transmission (secondary attack rate 0.7%) in December 2020-January 2021.74
  • In a study of K-12 schools in St. Louis with multiple layered prevention strategies in place, only 2% of contacts of COVID-19 cases in the schools tested positive for the virus; this was despite high community transmission rates.76
