So it seems the summary here is that mnx believes the new 2.6Ghz CTD processor will improove my performance
while gnome feels that the issue is primarily software and neither more RAM or a faster processor will improve my performance.
so what to do???!!

You have to observe:
Does your computer slows down on other operations?
or does it only performs slowly in backtesting?
if your computer is slow even while surfing the web, then you might have a software/OS related problem. e.g. virus or adware.
do an AV sweep is the next step.

Performs slowly mainly during backtesting and occassionally when I'm crazy enough to have 10 firefox/IE windows each with 8 or so tabs

OK, well hopefully the new T9500 2.6 CTD will be a mighty improvemnet over my old Intel Pentium 2.0GHZ . Or should I go for the Intel® Core⢠2 Duo X9000 (2.80GHz) 6M L2 Cache, 800MHz Dual Core instead of the T9500 2.6GHZ CTD?
