Multi Monitor Video Card

Quote from armoured saint:

I'm getting sick of buying into the bloat-ware. Just read an article that claimed to run Vista efficiently with your apps you may need at least 4 GIGS of RAM! WTF? 8 would be better! Jesus..8 freaking GIGS! And that's just to get it loaded.

20 yrs ago i could land a shuttle on moon with 512K :D

Seriously,
Is LINUX a viable alternative for trading software. Can it be made to work? I hate inefficient use of resources and have an uneasy feeling that VISTA is FULL OF IT!

Too funny AND very sad, but true.
That is why I chose a Dell that still had XP on it.

But anything more than 4 Gigs of RAM won't be used by 32-bit software. You would need the 64-bit version of a Windows OS in order to fully realize the additional memory.

Gnome, you hit the nail on the head!

Because of my concerns with Windows Vista, I decided to go with a Dell Vostro 400 instead of the Dell XPS-420, which ONLY comes with Vista.

Check out the "refurbished" inventory on the Dell Business Outlet site. You can usually get an XP machine there, and also save yourself atleast $300 off from a new Dell machine, and yet still get the very same 1-year warranty!

If you want to upgrade the 300watt power supply, simply go talk to the good people at PC Power & Cooling. They make FIRST CLASS power supplies and are one of the few aftermarket PSU makers for Dell computers. ( ie. the "Silencer 470" goes for $99.00 ).

I just ordered the Dell Vostro 400 late last week. ( Intel Core-2 Duo 2.66 with a 1333 front side bus and 2 Gigs of PC-6400, 800MGhz RAM ). $499.00

Will most likely grab a BFG Technologies GeForce 6200 PCI-slot card that is 256mb and supports dual-monitors for $70.00 at NewEgg to get up to 4 monitors.

There aren't many PCI slot cards around anymore, but I have spoken to the techies at BFG and this video card ought to be compatible with my GeForce 8300GS PCI-Express card that is already installed in the Vostro 400.

Definitely you made a nice deal there on the Vostro.

btw, if like me you have two Sammy 305T then one GeForce 8600 GT with dual DVI-I dual links is fine.

PS... I do have a PNY Quadro NVS 440x16 256MB dual head available...$359 last August...now $175 while it lasts.

Now you tell me....I just paid $300+ to Dell for a new 440. I always like to pay top dollar! LOL.

So far I don't think I get a check. But I'm rooting for the democrats to "include" me. I'll definitely spend it. Anything to do my part for the economy. LOL.

There is always a risk when you add a 3rd party card... especially when each card might want you to install its driver.

$175 is good. Usually can't get one used on eBay for that.

Addendum... I just checked eBay, and there is one for $175. That you?

just saw an ad for a slimline HP pretty loaded with ram and accessories for 399. Comes with an Nvidia card, forget what one, ad was in USA Today if you want to find it. Anyway, if it has a pci-e 16x slot available, I'm buying this puppy. Will pop a quad card in there. $250 for NVS 440 on Ebay. $450 for whole shebang. Adding another monitor anyway so I will have 5. Perfect!

May have to nuke the Vista however and purchase (or borrow a copy of) XP.

edit: will have to look for that 440 for 175! Aren't all 440's set up for a quad display (max)?

A caution on a "slimline" case... if the PSU blows, not so easy to find a replacement. (I had one once, PSU burned out... had to send the unit in for servicing.) But if you really want a slimline case, Dell has a special on a Vostro model for $449, to compare to the $399 HP.

As for the 440... 1-4 monitors, as you like. Suggest you move fast on the one for $175... wouldn't expect it to last long at that price.

Are you running multiple video cards on that 4400? :)

Quote from Jayford:

RAM restrictions are the only reason I am upgrading. My Dell 4400 has a limit of 1 gig, which now maxes out now when running too many DOM entry screens along with my charting, and I run XP. Just a recent prob, but still want 2 gigs with XP, would get min of 3 with Vista. I like having plenty of excess cause future software upgrades may be hogs whether its my OS, TA software, or broker software.

Just my opinion. Besides, desktop RAM is cheap unless you buy it from Dell!

I need to add a 2nd monitor to a Dell 5100C mini tower. Can anyone point me in the right direction to finding the right video card for dual monitors? I think I need a low profile card but I'm having a hell of a time finding the right one for this model.

You need to tell the board what video card you have... any low profile card will be OK so long as it's compatible with your other.

If you're using the onboard video now, you'll have to look inside and tell the board what kind of "slot" you have... probably PCIE or AGP, if any.
