More slogans, no substance

Quote from Mav88:

"... I don't want his hope, platitudes, and socialism, I want a real chance of a better future.

Then you must resist the Socialist movement... if not for yourself, for your kids and grandkids.

Quote from chartman:

The President seems to be talking out both sides of his mouth.
In one instance he says we must rebuild our industry base and bring jobs back to America. In the next breath he says we must not support a protectionism policy. What the hell is going on?
Protectionism invokes retaliatory responses from trading partners who then all engage in one-upmanship. That stifles trade. Exports suffer. Protectionism also makes the "protected" domestic industries less competitive on the world stage, not unlike rewarding bad behavior. See how that works?

What I heard was ....

Bank bailouts....emphasis on "more prop money" needed
Auto bailouts....emphasis on domestic manufacturing
Wall Street ....increased regulation
House Mortgage bailouts
Energy....Making alts competitive with carbon taxes
Education....performance rewards....general improvements
Medicine ....electronic records
Tax Increases on Small Business Owners
Social security cognizance....
More tax money is going to be needed

......................................................................

Thus the esssence of the speech was bigger government and a relatively smaller private business segment....
.....................................................................

Banks....Why not reward those have done well by serving them with the best parts of the failed ?

Autos....Foreign companies have won on US soil....hiring US workers....Their model succeeded and should be rewarded....

Wall Street....deserves more "smart" not vigilant regulation....

House bailouts to the most deserving....If an individual is not bright enough to understand the most significant purchase in one's lifetime....what does this suggest ?

Energy....The only way for alts to win via price is to make sure that oil based energy stays just as expensive via rules....

Education....performance based....very intriquing....but costs need to be dramatically reduced....the only method for this is via the internet....

Medicine....any significant addition to efficiency that will lower costs is good....

Tax increases....just the opposite should be happening....a 10% consumption tax ....is the only way to go....

Social security....where is the money for this ?

................................................................

I like Obama because he is self made....and I really believe he can be one of the US's best Presidents....In that a President serves as a "talking catalyst"....At talking....He is THE BEST....

IF HE WOULD DELIVER THE 10% CONSUMPTION ONLY TAX....

Obama needs to make some changes in the "tax structure"....

And needs to dramatically reduce the size of government....not increase it....

Quote from gnome:

For the '00, election, America understood we didn't want (couldn't afford) to elect the Liberal party candidate... so Bush was the lesser of evils.

For the '04, election, the focus was on the War on Terror... we were being "protected" from Osama.. and "we stayed the course".

By '08, we were so angry and fed up with Bush's self-serving BS, we were ripe for just about anything.... and there he was.

Hell, even Charles Manson might have won he election just to avoid another round of the Bush legacy...

I tend to agree. It was the Bush performance that handed the Dems the Presidency on a platter. Not necessarily Obama, but it would be one of the Dems.

Jindal was weak in his presentation and rebuttal. The GOP is digging itself a deeper hole and after Bush, it's already deep enough. If they don't get their act together it's going to be Dem Dynasty - unless an independent party can challenge effectively.

Sorry you don't feel a part of this.

Are you thinking of a different country to move to?

Quote from gangof4:

why are so many inspired by this guy just because he can make a good speech?

i have never felt so not a part of this country as i do now.

now the messiah is going to cure cancer and every American should go back to school. ummm, ok. we've got a guy preaching fiscal responsibility when he just rammed thru nearly a trillion dollars of pork so fast that he and Pelosi convinced the flock that there wasn't even a need to read it first before voting. and... it wasn't even a stimulus bill- it was a democrats wish list 'we won, we can do whatever the fuck we want' bill. an everyone (the masses, anyway) eat it up.

WHEW!!! change change!!!!

he makes speeches and he does nothing else. he's still campaigning. we need a leader, not a professional speaker.

i've served my country in the Army (and can still be called up). i'm disillusioned though. we went from an idiot, to someone whose goal is wealth redistribution thru speech making.

ok, /rant.

Really? I bet a 2000 do over looks good right about now.

Quote from gangof4:

i had Jindal's republican response paused til now.

WTF!!!!!!!!!! this is the rising star of the party?!? yeah, i loved being spoken to in a Mr. Rogers talking to a 4 year old voice and language. are you kidding me. omfg.

i weep for our future (and present)

The guy looked like a freaking Cartoon character!

He looked like one of those actors on Saturday Night Live doing some kind of skit. :D

Let's face it, the Republican Party is in shambles. They have absolutely NO leadership . . . And a lot of the things that Jindal highlighted ( in a most convoluted way ) made him look like a hypocrite.

Quote from gangof4:

i'm no defender of the Bush admin., but if fucking up the country were a criminal offense, Carter would have received the death sentence.

True.
But I think that South America left out the one of the BIGGER crooks in this bank heist . . . Phil Gramm.

Quote from 4444CJones4444:

It wasn't a bad speech, especially compared to that clown from Louisiana. What was the point of that guy talking? Did he want me to buy something? Do infomercials normally follow state of the union speeches or was this a special case?

In this environment, I really don't know what a leader could say, in the U.S. or anywhere else on the planet. All anyone can do is inspire hope and keep people calm. It's going to get worse before it gets better and everyone with half a brain knows it.

For those with a political axe to grind, there is absolutely nothing Obama could have said to please you. Just continue with your neuroleptic regimen, so you won't hurt yourself or others.

Agreed 100%.

In fact, I thought that it was an excellent speech and addressed the people of this Country in a "fireside" chat manner as opposed to soley addressing Congress.

It was well done, and well played.

Quote from drsteph:

This had a very different tone than past state of the unions - it was muted, subdued, and really didn't offer anything concrete.

I was dissapointed, even though the speechwriting wasn't bad.

State of the Union addresses aren't suppose to offer anything concrete. If you thought this was subdued, I'd hate to think what you thought about Obama's acceptance speech from Hyde Park.

Now that was subdued.
