For sure. I bought a monitor about a year ago and didn't know about the IPS screens, am in the process of selling it and swapping in an IPS.
Aside from that, the monitor size is a lot about how far away it is from one's eyes, no? I have a 24" and it's actually too wide [eyes have to move too far to go from one side to the other, can't take in the whole screen, moving my head back and forth to read print from one side to the other] until about 42" from the screen... I'm going to downsize a couple of inches with this upgrade...

It depends on your eyes pretty much. For me, I can't imagine using the default font size on these big monitors as I need to be way too close. I had two 22" Samsung LCDs bought 3-4 years ago before and while those got good reviews, the image and colors weren't even close to IPS.
Now I do fine with one 23" screen as the size is optimal for working, the screen itself is basically from LG and Asus just slapped its branding on it, the frameless design is good and it feels like a higher quality product compared to the Samsungs I had.

IMO a pretty nice setup is a 27" iMac retina (5120x2880 resolution). Awesome screen and a simple vmware fusion install has you running windows 7.x, 8.x, whatever without issues or significant slowdown. CPU specs are beyond what anyone needs for trading (which isn't really *that* resource intensive in the grand scheme of things). On my macbook pro retina I regularly switch back and forth from normal mac stuff (safari, mail, etc) to windows (sierra chart and tws) via ctrl-right/left, fairly seamless and clean.

Get yourself a full wall length and width flat screen, then get it connected to one computer : check out computer shops that do refurbishment so that they can change any graphic card if necessary.
Then when trading you can relax on your chair while "watching the wall".

But this is only true if you intend to use OSX apps as Apple gear is ridiculously overpriced for what it is and like I mentioned before, Retina is just Apple's brand of IPS screens - nothing more, nothing less.
Well I do intend to use apple apps for general everyday stuff. I don't need windows to run mail and use chrome specifically. Also this isn't just Apple's brand of IPS, its a 5k screen (not 4k). The only one you'll find selling that is Dell, and it most likely the same screen and priced accordingly. Anyone who has used a MacBook pro retina for any significant period of time quite simply wouldn't go back to a non-high dpi display on a laptop due to the resolution and visual benefits (its also easier on your eyes).
Go lookup the prices. The Dell 5k monitor is 1900$. The iMac 27" retina is 2200$. What's the difference? One is an entire computer with quad core Intel, 8gb ram, 1tb drive, wifi, gigabit ether, etc. So you're not getting a bad deal by any means. Now you may not think you need all that resolution, and that might be the case, I'm just saying its a great all in one option that has a killer screen.
