Plop - I don't know when you saw that program, but any real estate ON even NEAR the water is outrageously priced. You couldn't buy a sliver of land near the water for $150K - well, maybe if it was only big enough to dock a jet ski :D
Florida real estate has experienced incredible price inflation in the last few years, but Florida is notorious for having real estate bubbles. A common American saying is the following ... "Yeah, and I have some swamp land in Florida to sell you!" The current bubble may actually rival the bubble in the early 1900's, it's going to be interesting to see how it all ends.

I have lived in South FL my entire life and I truly enjoy it. It is a little 'yo' if you know what I mean, the further south you go, like Miami and part of Ft. Lauderdale. Great for single, but families will want to be further North.

You can get a 3/2 in West Ft. Lauderdale for about 150k and of course it depends on your standard of living whether or not this is suitable for you. You may have weird neighbors in this type of house.

East Ft. Lauderdale, near the beach, everything is more expensive. A nice (relatively speaking) house in West Ft. Lauderdale that is 4 bed, 2 bath and in a decent neighborhood at about $250k is probably $350k + in East Ft. Lauderdale in a comparable neighborhood.

Ft. Lauderdale to Miami is about 35+ miles.
Ft. Lauderdale to Boca is about 25+ miles.
 
Well said and explained. Yes there are other communities away from Ft Lauderdale and South Beach. That is what makes Southeast Florida so diverse. Something here for all differant tastes. You could look at Cooper City, Davie or Plantation.
Or go to Weston and West Miramar. All these places are just a stone throw from Ft Lauderdale.
