Meditation is a tool, a method. Actually, there are many meditations, yogas, breathing exercises, etc. one can do, with different goals and purposes. Unfortunately, most of it is very unscientific and based on intuition and hope. Each path is heavily influenced by their leaders, followers and practices. So any advice, is very hard to quantify the usefulness of for each single person. We're all different, at different places, needs and responses. Some may respond very well to karma yoga, mature and grow alot on that, because that's what they need at that moment. For others, the same can be even detrimental, because they need something else at that time, or they misunderstand the concepts, ie. not ready for that service.
I do believe much of it, especially when you find a path you respond well to, can bring alot of freshness, insight, broaden perspectives and make you realize alot, both in thinking and in actions, bringing freedom in ways your upbringing could never provide. However, there are also dangers: of losing oneself, of misunderstanding, of becoming a zealot, going solo regardless of others and reality, or being abused or scammed. So like in trading having a sense of grounded balance and retaining good (not common) sense seems sensible.
Every individual path is individual though, even following some brand of spirituality for a while, we always move on.. So though there's a big wealth in such practices, all over the world, we take it with us to new places and endeavours, in new and different ways, evolving. People would be surprised how much of new insights, new ideas and trends in all levels of society really come from such groups of seeking.
