No doubt Biden will be crowing today about making Juneteenth a holiday and what a great guy he his. A legend in his own mind.
The elephant in the room however in the civil rights/black community is that Biden failed to get the so-called John Lewis Voting Rights Act passed. Joe can do the skin color thing in filling open federal jobs but cannot deliver on anything more complicated than that. I know it. You know it.

Its important to know the full picture of the slave trade in those times. Slavery was so endemic and life short, people could not see the woods for the trees. They enslave us, we enslave them, it's not so simple.

Rents rise in line with supply of available units and demand. The problem is downtown there is no space for adding capacity so the demand always chases smaller number of units and this pushes rents higher. Same happening with suburbs as people move just out of city, especially near a metro/subway line or bus route. This is how real estate works.
Suburbs when approving new development can reserve a certain % for affordable housing in their permit approvals and I have seen it done in some areas. However townships are chasing tax revenue like everyone else so this is not happening in large numbers.

They will never change: It has been 300 years since they were brought to this Country sold by their Tribal elders through auction,it's been 160 years since they were freed by Republican President Abraham Lincoln, it's been over 50 years since they were granted complete equal rights, and on top of that, they have more "racial privileges" than any other race, they have been given numerous"entitlements" free education, free housing, all inclusive College's, Special Holidays, an entire Month that pays tribute to their race. And STILL they have failed to assimilate into our Culture/Society each and every day thousands of times they fulfill the negative stereotypes that are held against them. I feel sorry for the very small percentage that have assimilated into our culture successfully.
I am very familiar with the chess hustling at Washington Square Park. I went to law school at NYU Law right across the street and lived on West 3rd and MacDougal a couple of blocks away.
The hustlers would target the tourists and would never play anyone for money that they knew wasn’t a fish. It was common for the hustlers to demand a “rental fee” from the tourist if they lost. A few of them were quite good at blitz, at least master strength, and had perfected the skill of verbal abuse to throw the opponent off. I didn’t win every blitz game I played there.
One time a GM showed up (Ilya Gurevich if I remember correctly) and gave 5m to 30s odds and beat all comers.
In any case, it’s unclear what your point is about your white friend “who was one of the top 10k chess players in the US” losing to a black person. You don’t give your friend’s USCF rating. He may be able to beat you handily but he may not be actually as good as you think.
There are about 48,000 rated players in the US, of which more than 32,000 are scholastic players, and many of those are beginners with a rating under 1000. Being in the “top 10k” is unexceptional and would put your friend at Category A or above.
For comparison, I am in the 99th percentile with a rating of 2243, which may sound impressive but I would not stand much of a chance in a regular time control game against any professional IM or GM. In blitz I could probably win a few games.
