Yup, the election campaign thing is not an easy dunk for the government though if push ever came to shove. It is an area where Trump's past bad behavior actually helps him. He has a history of payoffs long before he was a candidate so that bolsters the argument that it was not some attempt to circumvent campaign laws. It is so minor though, I dont doubt that if the government wanted a civil penalty settlement he would just shrug and treat it as a cost of doing business.

Ironically, Hillary is the one who would not want to see Trump pursued on that charge. She is sitting there with some MAJOR, MAJOR campaign financiing/filing issues related to money laundering of individual contributions though the DNC-which she bought- knowing that there was an agreement that all individual contributions would immediately pass to her thus circumventing individual contribution limits to candidates. She is definitely not looking to see any environment shape up where people think that if it is fair to roll Trump over on campaign financing, it is fair to examine hers. No sir. Not desirable when viewed from Camp Clinton. Then there was that little ditty where Hillary funded the GPS/Fusion thing but declared it as a "legal expense" in her campaign financing so as to hide the operation and to be able to assert atty client privilege when asked. Nope. Another area where she does not want people looking.

When it comes to political investigations I believe that they should have an assigned end date and defined maximum budget. If the investigation goes beyond the end date then the investigators should be forced to apply for more time and additional budget to continue -- clearly stating their reasons on why this is needed.

Similarly the only only legal investigation related to the Clintons that should have had no end date was Whitewater since it was a case involving a huge mountain of paperwork to review -- and they stated from the beginning it would take significant time. And I will note the Whitewater investigation strictly stuck to the charter and scope of investigating Whitewater; unlike the Muller investigation which investigating & locking up people for crimes totally unrelated to Russian collusion.
