Look like ET could not keep many old members actively posting anymore. Why?

Well I think Y'all are waaaaaay to hard on the the Surfer. No I am not he, or have I ever personally met him, maybe one day. Yes he never admits to being wrong, but ya gotta love his Chutzpah. I don't know, maybe I have less at stake here so I don't care that much about who is right or wrong. I mean it is just an internet board after all. I really believe that to be able to have a serious trading board, it would have to be by invite only or members only. But the membership and viewership would not be heavy enough to generate Alpha, so whomever would start the site would foot the bill. Anyway thats my view.

I agree, his posts were always good for jokes, lols and entertainment.

The problem for Surf is 70% of ET members have a rationally minded personality type (myers briggs NT) The NT type is described as being analytical, intellectual, inquisitive, independent and complex.

Surf has a Sensing and Feeling personality type. The exact opposite of most members here. And so he made up some 'pricedriver' model in an attempt to sound rationally minded and fit in.

But he can never really fit in with most of the members here.

Its alway fun to watch extroverted sensing feeling types come to a board of mostly introverted rational types. They tend to end up looking and acting like clowns and jesters. Spanish89 was another example i remember from about 10 years ago, and there have probably been many others.

Yeah, the Ol' surfmiester is a passionate guy. I think that is what has made his threads fun in the past. The deal is I have "followed" him since the SurfShack, so its like something familiar. like getting Bronchitis twice a year, at least you know what it is, and it is not the Marburg virus. Speaking about ten years ago, you know who else was hyper emotional, Hitman, he had a great life thread but when you are that emotional, I can't see how you could ever trade. Well anyway good night Mr Surf wherever you are.

That was very insightful and accurate.

I would like to like Surf, would love him to win at trading but his dishonest calls and shoving mistakes under the carpet in full view on ET is so self defeating it grinds at me.
Hundreds of posts have been made by ET members giving good advice but Surf brushes it off.
Super frustrating as he is a likeable chap.

My understanding, there are at least three levels.
There are noobs who join ET and bring to the discussions bare bones basic queries which have been previously thrashed out so many times there are now hardly any more new variations of points of view which can be added. Therefore for the noob, his queries may mainly be discussed by other noobs, more senior members will no longer join in other than a handful who by nature are just prolific posters.
Then the more senior members will discuss more indepth points, often niche type subjects, options strategies for example or banking regulation etc. Therefore these subjects will only have limited appeal to the mass of ET members because much of it goes over their heads and of limited interest.
Lastly, there will be senior members who are more lurkers, seldom contributing. They have a succesful or unsuccessful trading systems and are content to scan briefly posts, replying neither to noobs or others, perhaps they have become sceptical of many points of view, just content to keep their thoughts to themselves.

Precisely (though I'm not sure how long it takes to become a senior member). Still, on occasion, it's nice to engage in debate, answer a question, or add a comment from time to time.

lolcow: A phenomena, usually observed on forums and/or image boards. A person, most often someone who tries to look exceedingly knowledgeable in the topic discussed, is being trolled to the point where they can no longer present "sane" arguments that will 'fit their level' but yet are too proud to just quit.
This produces a considerable amount of lolz and win, for which the said person can be "milked" until they finally give up. Or drop dead. Hence the name.

For some reason this made me think of the term "cow tipping".

Posting about trading will come about because a person is actively involved in the markets. If that person is forced out of trading because of losses or if he decides to stop trading for another reason, then the posts from that person will eventually stop as well. So I don't think ET or any other site can really "keep" a certain member posting about trading indefinitely if his interests have moved elsewhere.

But it's also possible that the same member could eventually return one day and pick up where he left off. I was contacted by a previously active member who returned the other day after having not been on the site in 10 years. He was so happy to see that things were essentially still going on in the exact same way just like it was when he left over a decade ago.
you have a great site here i am enjoying here wish i could have found this 10 years ago
