Which reminds me of the other dimension that Cheney brings to this scenario. She is co-chair of the January 6 Scamittee and is about to make referrals to the Justice Department to prosecute Trump. So there is another avenue she is pursuing to earn her Abraham Lincoln merit badge.
Indeed, one can argue that they have damaged Trump as much as they can, but it is also true that they are raiding his home with scams and trying to put him in jail. So he may not be damaged more but it is a full time effort to keep the witch-hunters from achieving more. These loons are dangerous.
I think H.W. Bush self-immolated when he broke his tax pledge of "read my lips no new taxes". He was pretty much toast at that point. People were also not happy that he pre-maturely stopped the Iraq invasion because of some tough optics on the "road of death". What happens sometimes/often is that the obnoxious attacker is not electable but ends out doing damage to the other party so that they end out voting for neither the attacker nor the one being attacked and go with someone else. That is scenario where DeSantis benefits.
Some pundits think that an example of this is Clinton's campaign when he was opposed by H.W. Bush and Ross Perot. They argue that while Perot himself was never seriously electable that he did such serious and continuous damage to H.W. that more people ended out voting for Clinton. Perot did actually get some votes that mucked up things too but the pundits argue that the bigger impact he had was in devastating Bush.
Anyway. lots of scenarions. Nothing looking good for Liz herself though. Just a chance to jump in front of parade going by and declaring herself the leader.

The law should equally apply to all -- and Trump should face indictment and conviction (when proven) for his crimes.
This is not a "witch hunt" -- it is a very clear matter of national security law.

Not necessarily. Much litigation required to look at the facts and law of such occurrences.
Classification and declassification processes and procedures are for the purpose of giving proper and orderly notice to the executive branch employees and/or to the public so that it is properly communicated and so that the underlings may know how to treat it and what classification status they can rely upon.
That does not apply to the president. He can declassify immediately it for his own usage per his ultimate authority under the Constitution even though it may take much longer for the bureaucracy to go through every thing and reclassify it for the public or the bureaucracy. Similarly he may declassify and - as we seen under Wray and Garland they may refuse or foot drag to carry out the declassification of certain material that Trump declassified because they figure he is gone and they do not need to release material that makes the FBI and the DOJ look bad. That does not mean it was not under order to be declassified or that Trump was not entitled to treat it as such for himself.
Garland - after his Mar-A-Lago- needs to try the case now. Go for it. I don't know, and neither do you, exactly what documents he had and how they related to his alleged declassification. But there is no turning back if Garland knows what's good for him. He can't just say, "well we got some boxes back" so we are done. Nope. Let's see the indictments and get on with it. The legal issues will be fully addressed in that process. If Garland backs down, well, can you spell "witch-hunt" boys and girls?
