One could argue that anything other than hand-to-hand is cowardly. Shooting a man from a distance is hardly courageous.
That's the problem. The so called courage and the cowardice are often poorly portrayed in the movies. People who have had their face in the mud and blood know a different story. Michael Moore is in no position to offer a fact based opinion.
Well, if the target has a chance to shoot you, too, it could be considered courageous.
I kinda figured you'd take the martial arts angle. Please tell me about a time where you were engaged mano y mano in a martial arts struggle where it was your life or your opponent's.
I know it's a guess, but I'll say that probably never happened. This is because you practice a martial sport. Sure, you probably learned to defend yourself, but if put in the situation, and it was you having to cheat or take a coward's way to survive or opt for honor and death, you'd choose for the cheat.
Even the Samurai - who all but invented the Bushido code based upon honor (it being the most important of the 7 virtues) would use any means necessary once on the battlefield to ensure victory.
Of course the closer the combatants are to the mud and blood and each other the more I agree with you. You gotta remember, I served in the USN. "Captain, there's a hostile blip on the radar!" "Petty Officer, push that button there!" "Captain, the blip is gone!" "Good job, Petty Officer, you'll get a ribbon for that!" : )

Well, there was this one time where my opponent had broken a wooden table leg off and part of the horizontal support came off with it, so he effectively had a war pick, like this

Wars cannot be broken down into simple pieces. Who are the hero's, who are the cowards? Who had the righteous cause, who didn't? Depends who you're asking, now doesn't it? There are many reasons men go to the battlefield and most of those reasons are the result of bad information. Either way, once there all those reasons pretty much go out the window. You end up fighting to save your own ass and the asses of those that serve with you. All else loses relevance. We leave the great debate for the pontificators. Survival is all that matters.
