Kaine: Russia Probe Now About Treason
Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine says the probe into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election is beyond an obstruction of justice investigation and has escalated into a probe of something more ominous: treason and perjury.
"Nothing is proven yet. But we're now beyond obstruction of justice in terms of what's being investigated," Kaine, of Virginia, told reporters Tuesday. "This is moving into perjury, false statements and even into potentially treason."
Kaine ran alongside Trump opponent and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the election as the Democratic Party's candidate for vice president.
His comments come in the wake of reporting first published in The New York Times about a meeting between President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. Trump said he met with Veselnitskaya to gather compromising information on Clinton.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., also released a statement on Tuesday, saying Americans "face a White House riddled with shadowy Russian connections."
"There's no escaping it: the Trump Campaign's inner circle met with an agent of a hostile foreign power to influence the outcome of an American election," she said.
Pelosi joined Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in calling for Donald Trump Jr. to appear before the Senate intelligence committee for questioning.
Trump has maintained his innocence and said he would happily "work with the committee" to pass on what he knows about his meeting with the Kremlin-linked lawyer. The president has similarly maintained his innocence and has questioned the legitimacy of the Russia probe.
