Kaine: Russia Probe Now About Treason

Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine says the probe into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election is beyond an obstruction of justice investigation and has escalated into a probe of something more ominous: treason and perjury.

"Nothing is proven yet. But we're now beyond obstruction of justice in terms of what's being investigated," Kaine, of Virginia, told reporters Tuesday. "This is moving into perjury, false statements and even into potentially treason."

Kaine ran alongside Trump opponent and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the election as the Democratic Party's candidate for vice president.

His comments come in the wake of reporting first published in The New York Times about a meeting between President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. Trump said he met with Veselnitskaya to gather compromising information on Clinton.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., also released a statement on Tuesday, saying Americans "face a White House riddled with shadowy Russian connections."

"There's no escaping it: the Trump Campaign's inner circle met with an agent of a hostile foreign power to influence the outcome of an American election," she said.

Pelosi joined Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in calling for Donald Trump Jr. to appear before the Senate intelligence committee for questioning.

Trump has maintained his innocence and said he would happily "work with the committee" to pass on what he knows about his meeting with the Kremlin-linked lawyer. The president has similarly maintained his innocence and has questioned the legitimacy of the Russia probe.

All of this is moot anyway. The Clinton/Comey standard will be applied. I'm sure Jr. never "intended" to break any law. No doubt Kaine, Pelosi and the like will be as understanding in this case as they were in dismissing the Clinton allegations. I mean, it's only fair and the left is well known for their never ending pursuit of fairness.

Heh. Comrade Kaine wants to believe that he would have been elected along with Killary but for the Ruskies. Sorry Comrade. You are a loser. Try again.

One of the biggest revelations of the 2016 election was how big of a shithead Tim Kaine is. He is horrible. The best bet for the democrats would be to send Timmy down the John Edwards path to never be heard from again.

Seems like a good kid.

Love the sound of left wing law professors being forced to tell the truth. Admitting that the anti trumpers are full of it.

"Left-wing law professor Jonathan Turley trashed Richard Painter, an ethics lawyer under former President George W. Bush, for asserting that the Trump Jr.-Veselnitskaya meeting “borders on treason.”

“There is not a clear criminal act in such a meeting based on the information that we have,” Turley writes. “Moreover, it is not necessarily unprecedented.”

There is no crime in listening to people who say that they have incriminating information on a political opponent, even a foreigner. Article III defines treason as “levying War against [the United States], or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” To say that this type of meeting even borders on treason is quite a departure from the language and cases governing that crime.

Moreover, it is hardly shocking to see a willingness to gather dirt during that election. Hillary Clinton was repeatedly criticized for her close association with figures like David Brock who was denounced even by John Podesta as sleazy and disreputable. There was also Sidney Blumenthal who was regularly denounced for spreading rumors and dirt against anyone threatening Clinton."

Treason is about giving comfort to the enemy during WARTIME. What a dunce.
