A lot depends on your Spanish level, mine is bad. If people can't talk to you normally they get tired of it.
Status is a bit higher being blondeish/tall and with blue eyes but sometimes you get labeled with stupid-gringo-baby however in a begrudgingly tolerant manner. I've never had anyone get angry with me. Overall however they are really nice people. When I explain I am not American they seem happier but they were going to help anyway. Most Americans who travel are decent people, interested in others. edit: Some retirees are hard to take of course.
I have homes all around the world, I am in Colombia now. It is nice here as they usually come top of world's happiest people list. Colombia is genetically quite diverse so even in non-tourist areas a foreign looking person is exotic but not a big deal.
I happened to be in Panama when I joined so left it like that on ET. It has been interesting to see the reaction though. There is a tendency to look down on suspected Latinos. It is kinda interesting to see a wee bit of frustrated prejudice from the angle of a non-white.

I left America for 6 months and it was nice to get away from loud Americans without manners and their aggressive road rage driving habbits as well as getting away from the PC crazed snowflakes. Who knows, maybe I will stop by in Columbia to check it out. If you are not American then you cannot relate to what I am saying. Where are you from? Ireland? Scotland?
Germans are much worse travelers than Americans.
I don't know who is worse when it comes to noise and lack of manners, Germans or Chinese? That is a tough one.
I grew up in Ireland mostly, lots of time in other places so my head is a little bit of this and that. I have American relatives and have spent time there, traveled the country. I know what you mean about getting space.
Colombia is very nice and the perception gap is enormous, particularly Antioquia department.
Bogota is too hectic and messy for me, due to the high altitude the weather sucks, goes from very cold to boiling hot at noon so its each to get a flu visiting. The capital is rarely the best city in any country. The best burger in Colombia is however at a place called "The Ugly American" in Bogota. The guy who owns it is from New York I believe so tongue in cheek but memorable.
The driving here.. redefines aggressive but they never get road rage. Cars are too expensive for them to crash
It is like driving in Italy bit more overtaking and less horn beeping/indicators. There is no driving test here, its all natural..sometimes too much but you get the swing.Always happy to give pointers if you get organised to visit Colombia. I prefer it by far to Panama which is quite like the US due to the history.

The younger Germans are a lot more relaxed now on average, sense of humor and everything. Its amazing, time passes and things change for the better.
Its the sneaky Austrians you have to watch for.

Okay seriously, from your perspective you should want America to have tough immigration policy. It would mean there would be less Americans which would mean less bad habits replicated (over consumption, carbon footprint, gun violence ect..ect..). Unless you want America to become a 3rd world hell hole....na you don't want that!

I can have a US passport of I want one, I am borderline American
. I started posting here mostly as I was struggling when encountering some US guys and wanted to understand the mindset. It is also handy to distract when waiting for a trade to work out. You can't get nervous when you are mildly cross hehehe My US cousins are fine, they are quite pragmatic so I know there are sensible people in the US but they are ivy league and 1%ers so not exactly average people.
The bad American habits are a PITA, rampant consumerism is to me a manifestation of mental illness.
America and immigration is complex. Nativism rears it's head, just go back to the The Native American Party, 'Know Nothings' of the 1850s. American has had a massive net benefit from immigration since then. The wall is a product of a psychotic polarisation to me. It is not about the wall, which is to me another band-aid on a seriously sick patient.
The third world is actually really nice but I am an Epicurean by nature, I like to live simply so when I have something great I enjoy it all the more.
