Just who are the bad guys in the polygamy case?

Do you give these people any room for adopting a different lifestyle than the majority? What if the women liked the setup? I don't hear them complaining now. Who is to decide they were "brainwashed?" Everyone concedes the children were well-cared for
-------------------------------------

Suppose a woman (the mother) picked up her kid for a visit from a foster home/ social worker and the mother has a black eye?

This would fit your criteria

Different lifestyle.
She does not appear to be brainwashed. She is an adult.
I suppose the woman likes the set up, she remains in the home.
She is not complaining
The child appears well cared for.

--------------------------------

The child witnessed the mother receiving the black eye.

The child heard the verbal language ("abuse?) prior and after.

The mother did not complain.

What lesson has that child learned?

What assumptions can be made regarding the mother and father, as an outsider?

Should anyone intervene for the childs benefit?

Yes, someone should intervene for the childs benefit. Children need someone to speak for them, becasue they cannot always undertand enough to speak for themselves.

Quote from FightTheFuture:

All different opinions on how this should have been handled. At least I think everyone here will agree if abuse of children is found, the offenders should be prosecuted.

What else do some of the people here want, the end of polygamy? That will never happen.

The end result of this raid will be no different than other raids. Some of these people are descendants of the Short Creek raid of 55 years ago.

History says that this sect will be broken up, for a while.

In a couple years when this prosecution and witch hunt is over, numerous new sects will be started by the adults and children and their descendants. Or most all - women, children, men of this sect - will return together just like in previous raids, maybe move to a different location.

And they will learn to be more cautious, more isolated, more mistrustful of the outside world, will find more loopholes to get around existing or new laws.

And more importantly, because of changing their tactics and going deeper underground, there will be more chance of abuse and less freedom within their community, and less likely the victims will be helped.

Nothing ever changes.

Polygamy will continue to increase.

I said this before, its not so much polygamy, but forced polygamy becasue it is the only way of life they are taught. And telling a child of 14 she has to marry a much older man or she will invoke gods anger. What kind of god is that?

But you make very good points. You are right, this exposure right now will only help these people to build even more secretive compunds where abuse will not be known.

Weep for the constitution that could not defend the victims of a cult who are deprived of knowing their rights.

The yfz probably skips that class in home school.

Of course, they are only taught the laws of their religion.

Sometimes I think legalizing polygamy would solve some problems..maybe. If legal, then nothing to hide from, all ways of life are open to view, learn, question, compare, then decide if it is waht a person wants for thier life..and no fear of god if they choose to not partake. But like anything that is legalized it will have its share of problems...but at least its open for discussion and analyzation. I do inderstand problems that can come from too many choices, but I would rather see the problems of many choices, than be forced to have only one choice becasue some leaders have not told me the truth about the world and the country I live in, and its freedoms.

I won't keep talking and talking my point of view, but one more thing to say. The yfz ranch is considered to be where the "elite" and chosen ones of god have the priviledge of being allowed to live. And these elders from the elite ranch when they "pick" their new very young next wife, this next "pick" of the elder str told it is extra special priveledge to be picked by such a man who has great favor in gods eyes. But waht is really happening is the elders by their self made status of elite one in gods eyes, use that power to "pick" the most attractive, young, and healthy girls of the group. The mothers of the girls do not see this, but believe their daughter has been chosen for a special purpose from god, and the elders say this is so, but the reality is these elite men are picking the finest, youngest and most beautiful of the group to own and enjoy while they are young....all in the name of god.
