I'd argue there are definitely people that will mentor for free, but the biggest problem is that most people who ask to be mentored never want to do the homework necessary. Why should a mentor spend time to teach someone if their student doesn't want to do the heavy lifting?
Finding a good mentor (especially a free one) is very difficult, I never got lucky and had to go about it on my own. After a while it becomes increasingly more obvious what you need to do after going through 'trading 101': read about a few price patterns, research the hell out of them in the market you're trading until you get all their characteristics and variations, and then learn to execute the ones that have an edge and that you understand best without making mistakes. Rinse, wash, and repeat. Sounds much easier than it is, but in the end that's the meat of it, and it's amazing how many people DON'T want to do this and think they can trade profitably.
