Job Fight: Immigrants vs. Locals

Quote from Sandybestdog:

However I am curios to know how your daughter is able to attend school full time and pay her bills while just working part time.

Simple... she has a well paid job and lives within her means.

Here are the statements to prove it. I don’t know what else you want, but there is no way you’re getting a full coverage plan for $100. If those quotes even true, they are like tire ads for $25. You go there and ask for the $25 tires and of course they are always out of them. Or your car needs different ones because of course it’s a specialized car, even though it’s a Camry. When it’s all said and done, somehow you still end up paying $75 a tire.

I do like it that you attempted to give give a real life solution, but you left out a couple of things. First off, Maryland income taxes are I think 5-6% after the first $5-6000. So you can add another $1000 for every 25k in income. The transportation costs of $200 is actually a median price I gave between public transportation and a car. A car costs much more. My car insurance alone is about $120, and trust me that’s cheap. I spent more than 3k in repairs last year, but I drove it for my job, so it’s understandable. You also left out any savings and/or college or business ventures so that somebody making $10 an hour can someday get a better job.

But most of all you forgot about Murphy showing up. And of course he’s going to show up at the worst time possible. Good try though.

Are you blind ?
The premium is $143 for the insurance that you claim you pay $262 for.

Now if I was as bad off as you claim, you can bet your ass I would be shopping around and not overpaying for the same product.

Quote from pupu:

This is exactly the example I've witnessed time and time again.

People coming from third world countries, getting degrees here, usually with no cost to them, and them competing with Americans on jobs here. They often get in and eventually turn into citizens. Nothing wrong with this concept.
However, the numbers, including H1b visas are well into the hundreds of thousands a year.

Only issue is that there seem to be a limitless supply and the numbers keep going up. Also, you don't see the process happening in reverse, at least not significantly. How many Texans are moving to Beijing in pursuit of a better life?

This is not outsourcing but just as powerful. When you add major outsourcing and an economic slowdown these trends do add up to create a powerful impact.

This trend has been put in place over the years by corporate America for obvious reasons, once again with total disregard of the impact on local workforce.

I agree with you. I am an immigrant myself. Came from Cuba at 17, finished high school, went to college, now working on my MBA and so far I have an educational debt of 100,000.

But as a US citizen now it does bother me the amount of people coming in. I know this is not my country but this is my home and it will be my child's country and I wonder???? WHAT kind of country will my kids be living in???

You live in a screwed up state if your insurance is $120 a month for just liability and you are 24 years old. Maybe you are overpaying for it too. $3000 in repairs ? What kind of vehicle ? Get yourself a honda or toyota and you won't spend near that.

There are 2 kinds of people in life

Those that let things happen and bitch about them.

Those that make things happen.

If you want to get ahead work 60 hours a week instead of 40 and stop crying until you figure out a way to work smarter for more money.

Until that time comes, stop looking for excuses to keep doing what you are doing now.

Oooh, that's a mighty REPUBLICAN/Libertarian view... won't play well with new "Obama largess" devotees.

Tell me which university is "usually" giving free degrees to foreigners? Foreigners pay out of state or higher for public university and the same price for private colleges. If they get assistantships, then they are earning their tuition, NOT getting it free.

Only issue is that there seem to be a limitless supply and the numbers keep going up.

It is very limited. And not easy to get.

Also, you don't see the process happening in reverse, at least not significantly. How many Texans are moving to Beijing in pursuit of a better life?

That is the price of living with the "better life"

Immigrants have a positive effect on the country. Cities like NYC would be in dire straits, because citizens abandon the cities, and immigrants gentrify or increase the working population.

I highly doubt she can support herself with a part-time job unless she's a stripper.

I believe that's wrong. Prove it.

Speak with a call center in the last 5 minutes? The second you hear an Indian accent, you know that anything above the minimal won't get done properly.

As for higher up work, just do some research on the street. It's not cheaper if you want the same quality. The indian centers consistently mess up work and cannot be trusted with anything even slightly complex. They take about double the manhours, sometimes more, to do the same work. Also, it has to be checked on-site in US, so you still need a skeleton crew here. In India, turnover is high for skilled staff, as the ones who have skills also have the brains to constantly move up & demand higher pay. For majority of the work, there is always a search for cheaper labor because wage growth in India is significant.

Offshoring looks great on paper, but in reality, it does not work most of the time. Sorry, your Indian comrades are not the geniuses you think they, some of them are borderline retarded. But a few execs are getting paid nice bonuses to create phantom savings, so the practice is here to stay.

I guess you made a good point. However, lets even assume all these people from all countries are like Einstein, I still believe these practices are wrong.

The true ending of globalization is a global currency, a global economy, and two world classes. The poor and the rich.

I already see it when some guys in India are taking some online accounting jobs, directly is no so bad but I know indirectly it affects my wage.

You actually believe a generic quote on a website trying to sell you something rather than the actual statement from a current customer? Did you read the disclaimer? Seriously you need help. Do you really think a major insurance company would sell the exact same plan to 2 different people and charge one person double? I have a life and health insurance license. I don’t know if it’s illegal to have different rates being offered by different agents, but it is not the norm. The company does the underwriting and determines the final premium. It usually does not matter whether you go directly to the company or a broker. So blab all you want, but you’re wrong.
