Jesse Jackson's Memories of Mandela

Quote from Scataphagos:

Good grief, man, the world powers don't give a crap about any of that.
ok, I will just wait for the world powers to tell me what and when a legal holiday is

the world powers don't give a crap about any of that

and I don't give a crap about any of them

How weak are you man? You have to wait for a world power to tell you when to celebrate?

I'll celebrate any damn holiday I want, and I don't need you or any world power to tell me if it is ok

The guy aint even in the ground and we're already bitching about if he should be remembered or not And that's just the ET website. Can you imagine trying to get a consensus in a torn up full of hatred country like South Africa?

Quote from CaptainObvious:

Once again I must be the voice of reason.:D I'll leave it to those who choose to pontificate about the man as to whether his cause was just or not. The facts are these. Like our forefathers, he was a violent revolutionary in the beginning. He and his band killed many people. That's what war is. What's the difference between a revolutionary and a terrorist? His side won, that's what, and history always favors the victor.
In time, he became a more peace loving man. Old age does that to a man. Now he is revered as a peacemaker. Perhaps it is so. In any case, he made his mark in history. Those that choose can mourn his death as we should the death of most men, in silent contemplation of what we would have done given the same circumstances.
All that said, his name has no place as a national holiday in the United States of America.
I didn't say National Holiday. I said worldwide international holiday.

Quote from Spike Trader:

No more Christmas Holidays for you.
I'm not religious but i didn't know God was a foreigner. lol

And yes i will continue to celebrate xmas, because it is American and family tradition.

What is it you poor souls don't grasp, this is not some "we're all in this together" circle-jerk. You're an American, we celebrate things that are good for America, not what you or the media view as good for foreign nations. if you like the guy, take the Captains advice and reflect on him yourself, on your own time.

what nation on the face of the world cannot say, "We are going to celebrate it, because his values reflect our values."?

They can't even say that about Jesus

(not sure if I have my English quite right there, but what country can say his values don't reflect our values?)

I hope you're not suggesting either: 1) that we in the US are bound by international law, or 2) it should be a legal holiday where people don't have to work by law.

also, it's a really ridiculous ASSumption to think we all share his values, i don't even know enough about him to say one way or the other.. and i'm not going to because i don't care.

good grief, no, you can work if you want to, you're lucky if you can even get Thanksgiving off anymore.

All I mentioned was Mandela was an inspirational leader, and the first reply I got was fear that he would get his own holiday.

I agree, all National Holidays should be abolished. If I want to work on any day I should be able to. Sandy Koufax didn't pitch on the Sabbath, and he didn't need some "world power" to tell him if that was ok.

So yes, I agree, Mandela was a great man, I just hope they never name a holiday after him, because that would be very un American.

my only dog in this hunt, is not having a national holiday for a foreign figure. Your previous post is all over the map, i did not say "abolish national holidays" or even that "mandela was a great man". All I said was we shouldn't have a national holiday for him in the US.
