Strictly prohibited to pay out cash to winning gamblers. So what do they do? Exit the parlor, go to the small booth right next door, and exchange their pachinko balls for cash at a markdown, same Yakuza behind this operation than the pachinko shop. Used panties in vending machines. Police stations right next door the red light districts. Give me a break. I love Japan. But Japanese culture is totally fuxxed up on the logic scale. Yeah, you must be speaking from experience pal. And if you were honest you should also state that you are not even considered a human being as a male unemployed in Japan. The shame culture dictates those individuals to only go out after dark. Exaggerated but you do get the point. You get nothing as unemployed. You cannot rent a place, cannot open a bank account, no welfare after 3 months, nothing. Not much different from other countries except that the suicide rate is a multiple that of most any other country in the world. Cheers to honesty and acceptance.

Yes, many brokers will not allow a margin or futures account to be opened if unemployed.

Don't we love our gaijins who are defending Japanese culture without any grounding in reality. Everything is relative, everything has pros and cons. But some stubbornly refuse to admit that fact.

Back to trading, all my points stand, none was refuted and I don't think they can be refuted because they are all truthful and factual. Day trading Japanese stocks is a suckers game and has a much lower edge and chance of success than trading a truly free market without the multiple barriers of entry.

As low as 80 yen. On a 1000 yen stock that's 8%. Whichever other broker you find that offers cheap commission either they sell order flow which totally fuxxs up your order fills or you still pay a multiple in commission than other European or US market executions. And please admit at least that there is a mandatory transaction tax. Another barrier of entry. You seem to be the one who knows little to nothing about this market

No, no, no. You obviously don't understand how commission works. That would be 16% RT. That doesn't exist on this planet. Commission is not based on the price of a stock. It's based on the total value of the trade. And the commission on a trade up to 3 million yen is just ￥80. Over 3 million it's ￥０ for margin accounts.

Why they didn't let you trade, I can't say.　They should have given you the reason. Unemployed, didn't have sufficient funds to open a margin account, chose a stock that was not eligible for short selling, or whatever else the reason might have been.
Most of the brokers promote margin trading. The interest rate is anywhere from 0% to around 3% depending upon how you choose to trade.

Maybe my question was not clear enough. I was not asking about margin accounts, or the interest rate for borrowing money from the broker. I was asking whether a resident in Japan is allowed to short-sell stock on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. And if so, what the cost is of borrowing those stock? I get the impression from your post about kabu.com that they allow you to do short-selling?
