Don't be mistaken. This is an attack on Israel BY IRAN. Hezbollah does nothing without being told to do so by Iran. Israel is tickled to death for this opportunity. They want nothing more than a good excuse to take out Irans nuclear facilities. And they would love nothing more than to have us do it for them. And we should. Taking out the Hezbollah missiles will be nice but not near as nice as taking out Iran's. If Bush doesnt take this opportunity to hit Iran hard then I will be one of the people hitting the streets demanding resignation/impeachment. Iran is 100 times more of a threat and enemy to the United States than Saddam every dreamed of being.
Yes I agree, this would be the best time for Israel to use the weaponry that we sold them to knock out the enrichment facilities that Iraq has built over the last few years. Either they do it or we do it. Those pussies in Europe won't do shit, unless they find themselves the targets of another attack. Look at what happened when the Spanish train system was hit (bombed). Those idiots (the Spaniards) didn't track the attack back to the middle east, instead they simply threw out the party in power and prosecuted some poor local scapegoats). Didn't you say that hisbollah represents 30% of the population? From the point of view of most Americans, hisbollah is simply a bunch thugs with their own interests in mind but it's much more complicated than that as they represent for many people in the region the last line of resistance against territorial expansion. I'm not defending them or pointing fingers (I think you understood that) but just trying to point out that they are part of a bigger problem that can't be ignored. We're talking about the Middle East after all.

That's what I don't understand either. Do they need the boots on the ground to pinpoint the locations of the katusha rocket launchers & suppress their fire from the air? Can't they intercept the locations of those launches from the spy satellites & hit at them from airplanes? I hope this compaign is well planned and somebody did the modelling of this war to project the number of casualities.
Katusha refers to an old Soviet era rocket platform. The rockets themselves have been modified and improved over time. They are much too small and fast to be intercepted. Fortunately, this limits the size of the warheads. That's why you hear reports of 50 to 100 being launched. Without large numbers, they aren't that effective.

It was originally intended as a multiple launcher mounting system. I imagine Hezbollah is using some systems with only one or two rails; which would reduce the weight and enable the platform to be mounted on very small vehicles or be squeezed into extremely small spaces on the ground. It's also been confirmed by the IDF that the platforms have been mounted in and on civilian residencies; using the occupants of the house as both a cover and human shields.
I don't mean to intercept the rockets in the air. I know they worked on this project but for whatever reason didn't finish. I meant to pinpoint the locations of the launchers & to take them out. The fact that they are located among residents should not matter as long as it's doable. If it's impossible to do technically then I don't see what edge is there for Israel in this campaign. Unless the casuailities among civilians do not matter for the military and their strategy is just to act and react ad hoc. How in this case this campaign can be won with the overwhelming superiority to restore the deterance factor as they announce it?
Whether one wants to intercept them or chase down the platforms is a moot point due to their flexibility of use; that was my point. Since they have to be used in mass to be effective, running down that many platforms is a serious headache. The only factor that eliminates their use on Isreali targets is to drive the users back and rob them of places to launch from.
The name of the game is realestate. This is a concept that the politicians keep getting wrong in the US when it comes to fighting wars. They keep tying up the hands of the military and insisting on limited forms of engagement. That's why the US continually finds itself in the same predicaments. The Isrealis have it right. They haven't survived this long by simply limiting their options of military engagement.
