The Muslim terrorists claim they will kill all non-Muslims. The Japanese are not Muslim. It is very much about Islamic religious extremism.

Imo it started before the arrival of any of the prophets. First it was the western Palestinians vs. the eastern and northern Palestinians, then one part morphed in the Egyptian desert and then it was the Palestinians vs. the Jews. Along came Jesus and now you've got a three way going. Then came Mohammad, split off some of the Palestinians, and you've got a four way going. (No one even remembers the old Palestinian religions now, so we're back to the three way.)

It's true. And some of them are helping us wage war on the extremists. Hopefully we don't stupidly add hatred of "moose limbs" to the equation.

True. Arabia has always been tribal, and they were slaughtering each other long before Mohammed. The Arabian civilizations go back almost as far as the Egyptian, but at some point any characterization becomes as much guesswork as anything else.
 
The Byzantines' ally was a Christian Arabic tribe from the frontiers of the desert known as the Ghassanids. The Sasanians' ally; the Lakhmids, were also Christian Arabs, but from what is now Iraq. However, denominational disagreements about God forced a schism in the alliances. The Byzantines' official religion was Orthodox Christianity, which believed that Jesus Christ and God were two natures within one entity. The Ghassanids were Monophysite Christians from Iraq, who believed that God and Jesus Christ were only one nature. This disagreement was unforgivable and resulted in a permanent break in the alliance.

So is religion a reason? Or an excuse?

Definitely so. But at some point, one develops patience, probably due to the "I've seen all this before" element.

As to who's next, I have no idea. It's far too late to give back the Fertile Crescent to anybody, just as it's too late to renege on the promise to give the Jews their "homeland".

What would the Romulans and the Cardassians do?
