The incident and the domestic response here is probably rooted in policy conflicts between our own military-industrial establishment, which has made a lot of money over the years selling to the Saudis, and those who think it is in our best interests to normalize relations with Iran and do business on both sides of the Gulf, like we did with Egypt and Israel.

Let's take look at the history of bumbling poor decisions made by politicians.
The reason for this is that most politicians are in their profession for their own personal gain... not for the good of their people.
This leads to very poor decisions like this Iran "deal" which in a short time is going to blow up in he world's face.
although I agree with you on most issues, this is one where I think you will be proven wrong. Of course we will have to wait and see. I think this Iran deal is going to prove extremely beneficial, and that Kerry will ultimately be judged in the light of history as one of the country's greatest Sec. of State. Iran and Isreal are two advanced countries if judged by the educational level of their population. We need to bring Iran into the Western fold, and this nuke agreement is the first step. We would do much better to be aligned with Iran than with the Saudis. It wasn't the the Iranians who brought down the twin towers.
I can see where you are coming from - but disagree. Iran's government actively spreads militant chaos across the region and the sizable Revolutionary Guard keeps the population in check doing what the clerics desire (who actually run the country).
There is a lot of discontent in Iran building among the young, educated population. It has flared up in violence before when the government thugs thrashed their protests killing many. We can only only hope for the rise of this younger moderate generation and the elimination of the clerics in the country's government. But this does not seem to be happening - instead the government has kicked the moderates butts, instilled fear in the population, and become more strictly fundamentalist.
Only time will tell how this goes.

Iran Says It Has Removed Core of Reactor, Key to Nuke Deal
"Nuclear technicians have finished removing the core of the Iran's only nuclear heavy water reactor as part of Tehran's obligations under its nuclear deal with world powers, Iranian state television reported Thursday.
"The removal of the core of the nearly completed Arak reactor is a key step before crippling international sanctions on Iran are lifted. The work must still be verified by outside experts.
"Under the deal reached last summer, the heavy-water reactor is to be re-engineered so that it produces only minute amounts of plutonium, like enriched uranium a potential pathway to nuclear arms. That involves exchanging the core and other major modifications.
"The spokesman for Iran's atomic department, Behrouz Kamalvandi, announced the completion of the work on the Arak reactor on Thursday.
"About an hour age, our job was finished," he said. State TV reported that the holes left after the core was removed have been filled with concrete.
"International inspectors will now verify the job and will send their report to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Kamalvandi said."
