Iranian air defense forces haven’t been seriously tested since the Iran-Iraq War and their level of training is a question mark.
Iran acquired 29 SA-15 units from Russia in 2007; Russians likely trained Iranian instructors on the system, who in turn trained the operational crews.
There is no evidence that Iran is training its missileers any better than the Russians do. Russia has been linked to two mistakenly downed aircraft in recent years.

Iran making the argument that they are complete idiots so that it is understandable that such mistakes can occur. Ahh, okay. I guess.

Might have helped - while they are on the learning curve for their own missile system- to at least ground or ban all civilian aircraft during that period. Why is that so complicated?
 
I'll give them credit for owning it whatever the reason/excuse. They could have just clammed up and told the world to fuck off, and the world would have done nothing but send sternly worded letters. Might even be so bold as to call this progress and an opportunity for better relations if played right. A smart Trump goes for the olive branch and if, IF he could improve relations with Iran, improving it through his initial show of strength and then a more diplomatic fashion he would all but destroy the dems argument against his methodology. Time will tell, but you lefties better pray for war, because a move towards peace and you're toast come November.
