Okay, they shot it down by "mistake". Next question not being asked is what did they mistake it for? You don't mistakenly launch a missile, so what did they think the target was? Obviously the missile was fired with intent to shoot down a plane. The mistake was the plane wasn't the type aircraft they thought it was. Everybody seems just fine with that, but that is in fact an act of war, be it defensive or offensive.
There is little doubt they believed this to be a aircraft flown by the United States and were willing to take the action of shooting it down. I'm not saying one way or the other as to the justification of their action, the plane was in their airspace, but it's clear to me that push comes to shove they have no problem taking a shot at whatever they see as a threat. That my friends does not look like a country on the run from us.

One well known and interesting tactic is for military aircraft to fly behind commercial aircraft to gain cover and penetrate airspace. We've done this before as have other countries, for instance in Ukraine. Perhaps that's what Iran thought was happening.

I have no doubt they believed their airspace was being penetrated and more than likely they thought it was being penetrated by the United States. They didn't flinch, they didn't blink, they shot it down. That is not the act of a country running scared. Crazy? Maybe. Scared, no.

There are only two possibilities. Iran shot down the plane on purpose or their military is the dumbest this universe has ever seen.

If you really believe that Iran's military is really that fucking stupid to shot down a civilian plane on accident and that is true, it wouldn't take more than a few days for the US to destroy their military. I mean shit. If you are convinced they are that stupid, they have no idea who or where to shoot.

Which actually brings up a third possibility that someone spoofed their radar. Not out of the realm of possibility, the technology has been used in Syria on the same SAM. Not saying this is what happened, just a third possibility. I still think it was a heat of the moment type scenario in Iran but just something to consider.

Probably, more a sign of ineptness. I think they are able to distinguish the flight pattern of a passenger jet compared to a drone or fighter jet. Or Iranians just have no clue on what they see on their radars? They probably, assumed it was a drone but, did not try and very if it is a passenger jet instead? Pilot would have answered if they radioed a message.
