Income gap widens between rich & poor

Quote from hoodooman:

When the government gives out nobid billion dollar contracts to their cronies, they create wealth.

They are taking wealth from the masses (majority of which are not wealthy) via their taxes and spending it in the most inefficient way possible by paying over the odds for a mediocre service. Btw, the politician(s) involved in the deal are spending the tax payer's money in the most effcient manner possible to the end of enhancing their career and lining their own pocket.

As long as the government does not take away your ability to start a business you are in charge of your own future. Stop complaining about socialism and get off your butt and go do something. Opportunity awaits you.

"... taking wealth from masses..." Generally, NOT TRUE... for Federal and State income tax. Progressive tax system taxes the RICH very heavily, others disproportionately low.

".... politicos [enhancing self at taxpayer expense]..." is of course spot on.

ABSOFRICKINLUTELY! The "promise of America" was the freedom to steer the rudder of your own ship.. NOTHING MORE! If you want to be rich, do what's required.

As we get more Marxist/Socialistic/Obamaistic, that promise is eroded..

false. the government can create wealth by progressive taxing.

false. the government can REDISTRIBUTE wealth by progressive taxing.

This wealth has already been created by people that are productive and will be redistributed to those that are not productive.

Progressive tax is impossible in reality. Few politicians would have the balls, ability or motive to go after the truely ultra elite for tax (which they don't currently pay). Aside from biting the hand that feeds them, it is always much easier to passify the masses with a program to raise taxes on the white collar workers higher up the scale than the average.

The way around this is to drop income tax entirely and rely on a slightly higher VAT on goods if necessary.

Quote from MaklodaSux:

Really now. How bad is socialized health care? Places like Canada, France and Britain. Are they really that bad off? Maybe they're just less greedy.

That depends on how sick you are.

If your healthy Canada has a great health care system. If you have a disease then you wait and you wait and there is no incentive to cure you, only prolong your suffering.

Trust me, I know first hand.

Only partly correct....

1. True, certain "very/ultra rich" may [despicably] get special benefits. But what makes up the majority of the "rich" in the USA gets HOSED UP THE BUTT on taxes... Doctors, lawyers, architects, small business owners

2. Middle-class have their taxes subsidized as do lower and poor. In other words, it's not "the rich get richer because they get special tax treatment" [generally], but rather "the rich get richer IN SPITE OF THEIR HOSING ON TAXES".

3. Yes, a VAT or National Sales Tax would be a benefit.... mostly because it would capture an estimated $200 Billion in taxes which is evaded by the "black market/underground" of tax non-reporters.

I agree, doctors, lawyers etc, however the really big money (heard of the L-curve?) isn't touched. There will never has and never will be a goverment that will not have certain members suceptible to the persuassion of very high value individuals. This is human nature and nothing can be done about that. Relying solely on VAT is the way forward. Otherwise reduce drastically and take away their power to grant favours.
