This is where you go wrong. The elite do not even acknowledge the existence of the commons. They are there to serve, fight, screw, fix, or do whatever else the elites want. Noting their existence bring you to their levels. They are tools, nothing more.

So by that logic, behaving improperly doesn't rank above behaving properly. For example, do you consider it proper behaviour to sit in a park with a trenchcoat on and nothing else, flashing young kids as they walk by? Can you rank that behaviour against sitting in a park watching kids play? Is one behaviour better than the other? Or is it impossible to rank them?

Just so I get this straight: Someone who drinks water out of a plastic bottle is "uninformed and "unrefined"?

The masses are a bit like those who would drink some medium quality champaign or a dry martini out of a plastic cup and envision themselves as cultured or sophisticated for doing so...because their group does little but drink beer from a can. The bar is set so low, that any elevation above that bar appears to them as rising above the class structure they are stuck in mentally.

So when someone drinks water from a plastic bottle, they are subconsciously trying to rise "above the class structure they are stuck in mentally" and attempting to appear "cultured or sophisticated"?

It is also a bit like someone who properly only drinks Coke from a glass bottle or poured from a glass coke bottle into a glass, and never ever drinks directly from an aluminum can. To drink from the aluminum can is gauche and immediately notifies observers as to the class status.

There are somethings a refined gentleman or lady just will not do...

If they had to slum it in an emergency situation, they would demand the Coke from the can be poured into a glass (not a plastic cup) from which to drink it.

Please advise if "gauche" is a temporary or permanent quality. For example, if Dame Judi Dench were to be seen sipping Coke from the can instead of a glass, she would be categorized as being "gauche" per your explanation above. However, I think most people would agree that Dench is cultured and sophisticated. Therefore, would she be allowed this one slip or has she forever taken a fall down the status ladder?

Finally, if a classy, sophisticated, cultured, and educated individual were indeed in an "emergency situation" and there were no glasses available, would they lower their standards and drink Coke from the can, or would a truly refined individual of superior breeding never sink to such a level?

I find this topic to be utterly fascinating. Thank you for educating me on subject matter I have never stopped to consider. It really is an eye-opener.

Speaking for myself, I must say that after I have exercised and am drinking water out of a plastic bottle, thoughts of status and appearance of culture are not running through my mind.

I'm just thirsty.
