Just keep in mind that the M1911 45 pistol was put into place after the Philippine-American war from February 4, 1899 to July 2, 1902

The U.S. army found both its rifles and pistols inadequate to put down a Moro in a single shot -- leading to the adoption of the 45 by the army -- leading some soldiers to carry private pistols of large caliber with adequate stopping power.
Even today... according to news commentary recently out of Fort Bragg... most people in the Army still view the M1911 45 pistol as the most lethal personal weapon at short range in the arsenal of our armed forces. "One shot and down".
