IB backfill is terrible!

Quote from John Bowles:

Maybe I don't understand this quote. I tried resetting my MultiCharts database and opening my workspaces to get the backfill for the day after trading hours (thursday night) and It sat there until about 9pm when I shut it down. Then I tried again at 3am Friday morning and got the backfill but it was flat from 17:23 hours to 3:08 in the morning.
I dunno about MultiCharts, but I have no problem backfilling NinjaTrader and QuoteTracker in the afterhours. For instance, it is 3:07 AM (EST) right now and the charts backfill fine.

Take the two following charts for example. For the first chart, I deliberately erased the data for the last two days in order to backfill later. The second chart shows the missing data using the backfill.

Hi Saliva,

I think they have fixed the problem. They gave me a call on Sunday and I think they put in some more powerful servers from a new vendor. The problems I mentioned were Friday when the problem as at its worst (server overload). I have a theory that the Montreal SXFZ08 may have been on a different server and with lower volumes it did not go into overload.

There was another thread on this problem and a person on that thread said that NinjaTrader was having backfill problems with IB data last week during the day when it was the worst (but not quite the same as MC was having). Some softwares apparently get the live data first then do the backfilling (not sure how they do that). MC does not. It does the backfill first and once that is caught up then it switches to the live. If the backfill is locking it up you have to close the workspace with that symbol, change the parameters to not ask for backfill and then reopen the workspace to start collecting the live data only. If you have another workspace with a different symbol as I do and this one is not having backfill problems you can just leave that workspace open and it will be fine.

Logged into IB around 9:05 AM EST. Put up the ES chart of 1-day, 5 minute intervals. The previous day's chart came into view. At around 9:33AM, the chart reloaded and the current day's chart began to form. Just now, I put up an ES chart with different parameters, and all of the candlesticks appeared. So, definitely an improvement from last week.

No problems here with IB data in QuoteTracker.

lol, execuse me? You mean data fees are built into the among lowest commission structure on the street? Lets not fight about a couple dollars but its pretty clear to everyone but you that the commission, IB is offering, does NOT price in the cost it would take to run a top-notch, stable, and reliable backfill data engine service. You seem to be very ignorant about the real cost of clean data service providers otherwise you would not assume that real-time feeds for most US markets come for free (free if >$xx commission generated). Also, clean backfill data can run into the hundreds if not thousands from vendors that specialize in such business. Wake up, dude, that you get access to data feeds and that even through APIs is something you would have to pay dearly for at other brokers/vendors (even Esignal which specializes in data charges for API access). Why dont you look at how much TT is charging for their platform? And they offer nothing else than data access and a pretty simple platform which pales in comparison to what TWS has to offer (not in terms of stability but features).

Give or take some the backfill and real-time data feeds have been constantly improved over the years and otherwise similar issues or outages have occured with other brokers as well, so nothing special about IB, otherwise IB would not have such a large number of customers.

My point is you sound as if you paid for the backfill and have a right to demand top-notch service. I claim you are demanding stuff you dont even pay for. You come across as one of those free-be hunters who would also scream when Yahoo or Google suddenly stopped their free email services. "How come we got this free for years, you are supposed to deliver this to me, I deserve it, I have used your service for years, give it to me, NOW". If you demand top service then PAY FOR IT!!! You always get what you pay for, take it or leave it.

On another note, sure, customer service needs to be improved but I dont find schmucks at most futures brokerages any more helpful, honest, or forthright. I suggest you gotta live with a certain level of dishonesty in this industry as everyone is chasing after a few bucks here and there especially in the brokerage industry.

Other than jumping ....... to (wrong) conclusions, do you practice any other sport? Even if you do, I strongly suggest a similar sport, well suited for the intellectual and moral characteristics you've displayed so far. If I may suggest, "jumping out of windows", or even jumping from high places. In your case, it would be highly desirable, if you begin practicing by jumping from the highest point you have access to.

The last one I need advice from is YOU. If it makes you feel good, and believe that you are getting a steal of a deal @ 2.35 per side, by all means. Trust me when I tell you that I honestly give a fuck less. Clearly, the old saying "a fool and his money will soon be parted" is hard at work in your case.

I am uncertain if intellectually you are capable of grasping the concept of asking questions first, then rendering an opinion thereafter, but you ought to try it sometime, before you bless, bother is more like it, others with your perceived invaluable advice.

Now grace me with your absence, and go play in traffic, preferably on a very busy highway during rush hour.

Warmly,
