I want to bet the farm

..Trading is not a get rich quick scheme....

Um, yes it is. I'm ALWAYS looking for something where i can bet big and make a ton of dosh quickly and, paradoxically, safely.

OP, if you want to do this trade (i don't much of it myself), use otm put options for max leverage.

In response to 'trading is not get rich scheme', I do agree in principal, but then there are special opportunities when you just gotta go 'all in' to a degree, as I said likely to not wager more than 30% of trading capital. Just look at George Soros's 'infamous' short sell of GBP, how much did he risk on that deal? 2% of his capital? Doubt it.

Yes there are opportunities to go in larger than usual never all. In the example you have given the Quantum Fund was trading other peoples money and Soros & Druckenmiller's stake on the trade were only a portion of the whole bet...

OPM would be the right way, but that's not an option. Maybe one day.

I do wonder how much did the fund put at stake?

When I see this I want to bet the farm, do you? I believe this is one of those rare opportunities to make extraordinary amounts of capital on the back of worldwide buildup to increased volatility. I don't normally overcommit, but when price breaks that TL I want to bet the farm this time :)

Don't go to the woods if you are afraid of wolves! No risk, no champagne!

remind me again why you want to take this trade? on the worldwide buildup to increased volatility? you know the big fish see TLs as liquidity pools.

It may all be rather basic stuff, yet it did predict action that later evolved into a 'credit crunch' and quite a few other big events.
