Hundreds of refugees are identified as war criminals

Concur with your points, only problem is that the "elites" in the respective Eastern European nations are the ones that are scare mongering and drawing the devil on the wall to scare their people and that in no way a majority of Polish, Slovenian, Hungarian, Romanian citizens are in fact against hosting some fair share of asylum seekers. Right-wing extremists would love to gain a majority of citizens on the side against opening borders but it does not change the fact that their citizens think differently. Victor Orban of Hungary is the prime example of someone who pretends his people made the choice to close borders when in effect he is a right wing extremist and xenophobe. He is not representing the people who voted for him. That is the problem.

To be fair many of these European countries (Romania, Hungary, Greece, etc.) don't have the financial resources to support the settlement of refugees. The reality is that polling (see recent Le Monde article) shows that over 70% the residents in these countries oppose accepting refugees.

The idea that Germany and the EU is forcing these countries to accept refugees against their will while providing no financial resources to help is a significant issue. I will give credit to Germany for accepting a large number of refugees. However Germany has the financial strength to support doing this... these other countries do not. In the case of many of them (e.g. Greece, etc. ), their poverty is driven by EU financial policies driven by the German elite. You can debate if the loan policies are correct or not, but it is difficult to say "hey, we made your country broke, by the way you must settle X thousands of refugees... but we ain't giving you a dime to help".

I understand that some of these countries (e.g. Hungary) have right-wing leaders.... but polling shows most of the population supports them on refugee policies.

Well maybe those countries should then think very hard what place they take in Europe. Because always being on the receiving end will not work in the long term. Being in a union means that this privilege comes with advantages but also responsibilities. Unless we go back to the ape age where we hit each other with clubs over the head we should pride ourselves in being civilized people who recognize the occasional need to protect those who are chased after and killed in other regions of the world for religious ir political reasons and we should pride ourselves in wanting to offer temporary refuge. That costs sacrifice no question. But denying women and children or the elderly and essentially letting them die in front of our doors is not the way to go. We should then have made earlier decisions to not even let them into europe and instead should have tried to convince and finance turkey to set up temporary settlements near the Syrian border. It is a bit late for that. But flat out rejecting them in front of our doors makes me feel ashamed to be in the same union than Hungarians and those who left those people at their own mercy. I feel we should aspire to higher standards than some right wing populists.

Speaking of Turkey... they have made a number of demands to the EU in return for Turkey's support regarding refugees...

Turkey demanded on Thursday that the European Union start easing restrictions next year on Turks traveling to the European Union if it wants full cooperation to stem the flow of Syrian refugees and other migrants from its territory to Europe.

No wonder there are compatibility problems between "xyz" and Turkey.

This is an interesting summary by Gwynne Dyer that relates Germany's current acceptance of refugees to the nation's past when "between 1945 and 1950, 12 million German refugees arrived in the shrunken territory of post-1945 Germany -- a Germany that had been bombed flat and was desperately poor" and were taken in.

Germany knows well the plight of refugees

Yeah, except Germany is getting hoodwinked.

These are mostly INVADERS, not refugees.

Way to go Turkey. Greeks showed how to lose the goodwill and benevolence by playing the Nazi card. It got them nowhere but almost to the brink of total disaster. Making enemies before even entering the union. Some states heads are simply retarded. And others wise and intelligent. Pick in which camp you would place Erdogan.

We’re not your concentration camp, Turkey tells Germany’s Angela Merkel
