'There will be conflict': Huawei founder says US underestimates company's strength

The founder of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei, has said the US “underestimates” the telecom giant’s strength, and that conflict with America was inevitable in the quest to “stand on top of the world." Ren told Chinese media: “The current practice of US politicians underestimates our strength." (Guardian)
 
ARM and Huawei

The British phone-chip-design giant ARM has told staff that the U.S. clampdown on Huawei means it has to stop trading with the company. If this blockage continues in the long-term, that means Huawei's phone business—the second-biggest in the world—is almost certainly toast. Most phone processors out there are based on the SoftBank-owned company's designs. BBC

It is sad to see that ARM gets dragged into this issue. Their products are used in Huawei's mobile phones. The mobile phones are not accused of having backdoors to China. It is Huawei's networking equipment which is being accused of having such backdoors. However, that networking equipment is not using ARM cores as those are not suitable (or designed) for these applications.
 
Huawei Vendors

The Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite fell today by 1.36% and 1.65% respectively, following news that Japan's Panasonic had become the latest Huawei vendor to suspend work with the Chinese firm. The Nikkei was down 0.6%. European markets also fell by over 1%, and you can expect the same to happen in the U.S. today. Guardian

Hikvision, the world's largest surveillance company, is reportedly up next, allegedly due to its role in documenting Xinjiang's oppressed Muslim minority. Thanks for all the links Dealmaker, that's one reason cutting trade discussions and much trade with the US won't be as easy to compensate for China as just directing more trade to other regions. No understanding with the US is accompanied by far reaching sanctions.
