Same thing happened to me with a video camera back in the 1990's. I felt so smart negotiating the price down to $50. Then i opened the shrinkwrapped box and it was a bunch of newspapers!
I think those people who bought an item in the late 80's and opened up a box inside to find shredded paper and a rock felt they had been conned.
Oh wait....it was a pet rock. Never mind.
Remember those things? Were a big seller when I was a kid.
Yes, the inventor made millions. Brilliant!
Great topic. I read a piece about a " reformed" conman. Basically he got caught and decided to,work with the authorities. He said when you go to a mall and fill out a card to win the sports car, those mailing lists are highly prized. The type of person who believes he's gonna get something for free is highly susceptible. He said that dentists are easy marks. They generally have low self-esteem and want to feel liked cause no one likes going to them. Separately, my girlfriend who is a former sales exec says the "contests" and sweepstakes are often rewarded to their best clients anyway. You say you didn't enter? Your secretary did it for you. Congratulations!Having moved to South Florida, I quickly discovered this area is crawling with schemers, dreamers and outright con men. I want to start this thread to share ways on how to spot someone who is out to con you.
My number one tell is that they insist on speaking with you or meeting with you PRIOR to sharing any details of their "deal or project".
They try to make you sign an NDA even if there is no reason for it. If they are so easy to go around, they don't have a relationship to begin with --
Another strong tell, which I learned from Rearden Metal on this site, and it has proven true is that they insist on calling you Buddy or Friend before they even know you.
Would like to see what others have used to smoke out these unsavory characters.
