America and many western democratic countries have provided an environment where scientists are respected and cherished for their talent and knowledge not whether they support the regime or not or idolize the country's leader or not. You can curse at Biden and call him an asshole all you want all day long but if you've got the talent and skill, you will be respected and cherished in America. It's that simple. Would you be able to do that in countries like China or North Korea? No. That's the difference and that's not something that they need to market because it's the truth. One day if China allows people to curse at its supreme leader and not allow CCP directives to dictate scientists' ideas and research, trust me all of the talents will flock to China.

It's very difficult as an immigrant to decide what to do, stay in the country that provides incredible opportunities, or return home where family, friends and culture are source of comfort but work opportunities and salaries are more limited.

I'm not from Singapore, moved here in 2019. I lived in China, Hong Kong, Australia and half a dozen other countries around the world. And yes, I can say you don't have a clue of what you're talking about.

I don't think I have a very strong (negative?) bias towards western countries, I just don't have one against the rest of the world, precisely because I spent 40 years living in various countries, not just travel.

Scientists do what scientists are asked to do. If you work in a government lab, you do what government tells you to do, or you start a business, in China, Europe or America. All the same.

More than 60% of post-doc students are "international", which most likely means Asian students. Why? Because there are good schools in Europe, not many flew to US for doctoral degrees.

Funny you say that because when my wife and I left Hong Kong for Shanghai in early 2000, we entered with a 6 months tourist visa and settled there. She worked for a start up, I worked on a furniture project, we rented an apartment, had our belongings shipped over, opened a bank account and no one ever cared about our residency or work status.

That was in year 2000. As I am sure you were aware, there was a regime change with the installation of a new president which totally changed everything is China which included its attitudes and management of foreigners. China has never been the same ever since. Otherwise why did you leave? Your action completely betrays what you say and promote which makes you one big hypocrite.

Regardless of the nationalities or races, these are very smart kids, whether they stay stateside or go back is up to themselves to decide.
